East Central High School is located in Suffolk County on Long Island N.Y. Although it’s located in what could be considered an Agri-business type community, where vineyards, large vegetable plantations and potatoes among other crops are grown, their contributions to many other aspect of the society are recognized.
This High School is noted for it’s excellence in sports and Academics where graduating students usually go off to colleges across the country to pursue their professional careers in varying fields of study.
In the year 1990 two such students Becky Aarons and Tina Samuelson were two such graduates from East Central High School who went on to separate colleges after graduation.
Becky majored in Physical Education and Tina in Business Administration.
Years later there was also another girl Gail Sawyers who lives in a neighboring low income community to Becky and Tina who graduated from East Central. However because of her personal and unfortunate circumstances she realized that college was by all account out of her reach.
That being her problem she would remain local and hope to establish herself by getting employed then register as a part time student at the local Community College.
Due to Gail’s economic circumstances she failed on occasion to make rational decisions even while in school. As an excellent tennis player at the school level she was determined in her own way to excel on the tennis court and become the best tennis player ever.
She was prepared under any circumstance to pursue her dreams even under the most difficult conditions causing great anxiety and concern to her peers as well as her family.
Despite this fact however she did very well socially and in school too despite all the difficulties at her home including her mother’s poor health plus the absence of her father who was suffering from a psychological disorder ever since his return from combat activities in Viet Nam.
As a student at East Central she displayed good qualities and natural ability both in the classroom as well as in the field of sports where she truly excelled.
Gail was noticeably fond of animals and was frequently seen reading about them. Here she concentrated mainly on horses and at times she would be seen drawing horses in different forms.
They would be racing competitively galloping or jumping steeplechase competitively in stride as if in a typical show.
The impact of the athletic program at East Central was evidenced from the fact that four students after graduating were selected to represent the United States in the summer Olympics.
In the group of four there were two boys on the track team and two girls who completed the group as tennis contestants.
Gail had the potential to excel in any field of study. However to the dismay of her teachers relatives peers and counselors at East Central Gail refused to live up to expectations and her true potential.
Her lack of discipline resulted in her receiving a varying manner of punishment as directed by the Principal on so many different occasions.
Because of boredom and inactivity as she would say at times cause her to be rebellious and disrespectful to adults whether it be teachers or administrative staff members and this was of great concern even to her peers at school.
Gail’s adamant lack of cooperation became evident when she was heard using offensive expressions to a number of students in her classroom.
This obviously resulted in the Principal reacting very harshly when this behavior became known to her.
Gail was immediately suspended and would be readmitted only if accompanied by one or both of her parents after meeting with the Dean and the school Principal.
Gail `s mother was deeply concerned about this late development as she was required to accompany her daughter on her return to school to meet with the Principal and the Dean.
Apart from discussions about Gail’s disciplinary problems there would also be discussions relative to her grades progress at school general developmental objectives and her post graduation ambitions.
Due to very poor health condition her mother was unable to attend the meeting at the school as required by the Principal.
Gail was subsequently suspended for two weeks for being
