Chapter One
Half-dressed in a custom-made tux, the groom-to-be hustled through the door of his future in-laws’ luxury suite. Rushing forward, bride-to-be Roxy gripped his arm.
Connor,
she blurted, Mom and Dad hired a private eye to find out more about you. He says you had two marriages before you met me, and both wives died early on under strange circumstances. You were considered a suspect both times. Please tell me none of this is true. It can’t be! Connor, you were never married before, were you?
Roxy, oh my God, what the hell is this?
a flustered Connor asked, seemingly as jolted by the news as his fiancee had been. Wiping a glob of shaving goo from his cheek, Roxy’s golden beau struggled to collect his thoughts, while across the room, her dad and brother edged forward, simmering.
Roxy, I’m sorry, so sorry,
Connor stammered, looking in his fiancee’s eyes and trying to hold her. "I never meant to hurt you, I swear, but yes, it’s true. I was married twice before, and both wives died early on.
Terrible tragedies, but they were both accidents, nothing more. I can explain it all, and the police can back me up. At first they tried to pin some of the blame, or all of it, on me. But they couldn’t. It all blew over, and now it’s all in the past.
So, what they’re saying is true?
an incredulous Roxy asked, thrusting her open hand towards her parents.
Connor nodded weakly. Before he could say a word, Roxy cried, But why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you say something? We’ve been dating for two years, and engaged for six months. You never said a word. Oh, Christ! What else haven’t you told me?
Rox—please listen—I meant to tell you, but the time was never right,
Connor tried to explain. I was scared of losing you. I knew that if I said something, your parents would find out and jump all over it, and that would be the end.
Stop making excuses!
Roxy shrieked, flinging her arms up. This is something I had a right to know. How can I ever trust you again? How can I walk down the aisle and start a new life with you, when I can’t believe a word you say?
It was one hour before the glamorous but classy Las Vegas wedding of Roxy Drake and Connor J. Barrington was supposed to take place. But with the groom and his future father-in-law hurling insults at each other, and then trading punches, it seemed unlikely that the ceremony would go forward.
Disgusted, angry, and confused, Roxy ran back to her room. Grabbing her purse and throwing a denim jacket over her vintage lace wedding gown, she bolted from Caesar’s Palace after a quick pit stop at an ATM. Left behind were her shaken, bewildered fiancé, parents, and bridal party.
Fast forward one year to January 2018, and Connor has no idea his runaway bride is now being held captive on a dysfunctional alfalfa farm in Pahrump, Nevada, 50 miles from Las Vegas. Twenty-six-year-old Roxy and her 25-year-old BFF, Crystal, had been kidnapped during a late-night armed robbery in the lobby of the casino where they worked.
On the Fleck Farm—named after the raunchy triplets who’d kidnapped them—they were forced to do endless menial chores. Before, during, and after their grueling
