    CHAPTER ONE

Saki Starling haggled with the old, bald pawn shop owner until she saw the extraterrestrials stroll by. Both she and the shop owner stood with mouths agape, staring at them. They didn’t look too different from humans. But there was something in the way they held themselves, in the green ends of their hair, in the pointed tips of their ears—that shouted alien.

The old man nodded at the males as they passed outside of the security windows. I’ve only seen them on the tube. Isn’t that something, seeing the aliens here in Greenwood?

The taller of the two said something to the other one and then threw his head back to laugh, flashing sharp canines.

They’re called Arcons. Saki bit her lip, fighting an overwhelming urge to go after them like a crazed fan girl. She’d watched every show on TV that featured the Arcons, until her mom had pawned the television. They have fangs like a vampire. How sick is that?

Back to business. She frowned at the old man. Is that all you’re going to give me for my mother’s ring? Saki rested an elbow on a dusty old TV. The whole shop was in need of a vigorous scrub down. She could write her name in the grit on the counter tops.

    Your mother’s ring isn’t gold. It’s silver.

But my mom told me its gold. Maybe the old man keeps his business going from cheating people who pawned stuff.

No. It has an ultra-thin gold electroplate. He showed her the bottom part of the ring, where a sheen of silver showed through the gold. See, here’s where it rubbed through.

You’re right. Mom’s last no good boyfriend must have been a cheap bastard, too. Saki’s heart sank as her stomach gave an insistent growl.

He peered at her over the rim of his glasses. Say, are you sure this ring is yours to pawn? You look quite young.

She lifted her chin and straightened her back. I’ll be twenty in three days, and my mom gave me that ring. Being small boned and five-foot even, she did look young. People were always mistaking Saki for a sixteen-year-old. It made finding a job extremely hard.

    You want the money?

Saki gave a dejected sigh. How am I going to pay the rent now? I’ll take it.

He shoved a clipboard at her. Sign here.

Fine. She quickly scrawled her name and other information across the indicated lines. Thank you. Saki snatched the twenty out of the old man’s hand and dashed down the aisle of dusty overpriced junk. She paused to push open the heavy door.

Hey, excuse me. She ran to the two Arcon males who towered above her. They had to be at least six feet tall. They both stopped to turn around. Each wore jeans and those cool wraparound sunglasses, but one wore a long sleeve light green shirt, while the other wore putrid yellow that looked terrible against his paper white skin. Even an ordinary black T-shirt would have been better. The low ponytails they both sported were a disappointment. All that white and green hair would have looked sick in a Mohawk.

Yes, can we help you? said the one in the green shirt and taller of the two. He spoke with a crisp British accent.

Uh. Her stomach knotted. Now she’d gotten their attention, she didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t like her to have a bout of shyness, but perhaps the sudden light-headedness from her rush to get here was to blame. My name is Saki. I just wanted to tell you how cool you look with your green tipped hair.

The one in the yellow shirt ducked his head, his cheeks flushed violet.

He’s shy. How cute. And lavender colored skin, she added, grinning.

Thank you for the compliment. The one in the green shirt gave a head bow. I’m Brock, and this is my co-mate, Tane. Is there anything else you needed?

Co-mate? She eyed the way Tane gripped Brock’s upper arm and kept glancing down. Saki sighed. They’re gay, and they’re going to give me the brush off, just like everyone else. The black leather bracelets on my arms don't exactly invite anyone to get close and have a warm, fuzzy conversation. Most people don't bother to look past my ink black hair and Banshees tees. These guys won't be any different. Her head swam, and she staggered, grabbing Tane’s arm.

Tane shivered. I feel a tingle.

Sorry. Is a tingle bad? Letting go of his arm, she took a step back, but her head spun. Damn.

Tane put a steadying hand under her elbow. Are you all right?

Yeah, fine. Couldn’t be better, she lied, but her stomach lurched. An unwelcomed hurl always came next. Not now.

Are you ill? Tane looked at his co-mate.

Maybe. If I toss my cookies, then they’ll leave.

Brock moved closer. You’re exceedingly pale for a human. When was the last time you ate?

Saki took several deep breaths, trying to keep from being sick, but fainting was a closer option. I had a cracker two days ago.

That’s not good enough. Brock took her other arm. Let’s take her in here.

The Arcons led her through a doorway. Saki didn’t have the energy to look up, but from the rich smell of food, it was a restaurant. But the only eatery around here is Trixie’s place.

    Oh shit.

    Saki, is that you?

She glanced up to see her mother’s boss—all three hundred pounds of her and dressed in a red checkered dress with a white frilly apron over the top—bearing down on her.

Saki would have turned and fled, if it hadn’t been for the dizzy spell. Great, now what do I do. She gave the woman a weak smile. Hi, Trixie.

Trixie parked herself in front of Saki with fists on her ample hips. Where is your mom? I’ve been trying to call for the last three weeks, but I keep getting a message that your ‘phone number is disconnected or no longer in use.’

I… don’t know. Saki shook her head and wished she hadn’t, as it triggered another dizzy spell. Mom went on a date and hasn’t gotten back yet.

    Trixie frowned. For how long?

    Three weeks.

Oh, that figures. She gestured toward the restaurant. I have a restaurant full of people to feed, and I had to hire another waitress. If she ever gets home, tell her that I gave her job to someone else.

Okay. Saki nodded but staggered back a step. She would have fallen, if the two Arcons hadn’t been holding her up.

The older woman narrowed her gaze. What’s wrong with you?

    She hasn’t eaten, said Brock.

Trixie finally looked at both males. Oh good heaven, you’re not human are you?

No, we’re Arcons, said Tane. We ran into Saki outside. She looked faint, so we brought her in here.

Trixie’s expression softened. Poor dear. You were coming here to tell me about your mom, weren’t you?

Um, sure. Saki’s knees started to shake. Not hurting Trixie’s feelings seemed the best option at this point.

"I would have given you your
