To my husband who is the inspiration for Vach, and to my daughter who helped me with the humor.

To my mother who is still with us and to my father who isn’t. For the road trip to the Mojave Desert that they took my sister and myself on. Where we went rock hunting along the Colorado River, and it rained for three days, keeping two young girls cooped up in a modified van. Then when it finally quit raining, the desert bloomed filling with color. Without that experience these two short stories or the prior book would never have been written.

You sure your wife is up to this? asked Xeno, leader of the Outriders. Vapor plumed from his mouth as he spoke. He frowned from his seat on his sherakey, Storm.

Vach petted his old mount’s nose. This is the only time that Maya can spare from her ambassador duties. The prime minister shuts the government down when it’s this cold.
