    CHAPTER ONE

Blade jerked out of the nightmare with a gasp and stared at the warning lights flashing like his mother’s angry eyes had so long ago, before she’d sent him away. A cold sweat broke out.

I’m not the same sad, wretched offspring anymore. I am Blade, a warrior and survivor.

An emergency alarm intruded on his gloomy thoughts, jolting adrenalin through him and driving the melatonin from his system. Groping for the manual awakening button below his palm, he pushed it. The IV slipped out of his arm, and a moment later, the clear plasglass dome retracted. When he sat up, he nearly fell over, but steadied himself on the edge of the capsule. Feeling around for his weapons, he couldn’t find them.

What was going on? Where was my blaster and battle armor? Was the cavern being invaded? He tried to remember which cavern he had been assigned to this time, but couldn’t focus. Am I still at Yelena?

Where’re the medics? Blade croaked, his voice dry and rough. Damn medics, we’re in an emergency situation. He needed a stimulant in order to go into action.

His gaze took in the long, narrow room with the brushed silver walls, and rows of hibernation units. This was no cavern on Arcon but a spaceship.

A couple of other units opened, and the silver-dressed, groggy inhabitants were slowly climbing out.

Blade frowned. Civilians? Why am I in with the civilians?

He rolled out and landed on all fours, which stung his hands and broke off three of his overgrown, claw-like nails. Goddess.

Standing proved to be a challenge as he pulled to his feet on a neighbor’s unit. Move legs, move. It was hard to walk, especially since his toenails had grown out and around his space booties.

Blade shoved his long white hair out of the way. His warrior topknot, which had been on top of his crown, tapped him on the butt with every movement. Peering down into the interior of the capsule he rested on, he recognized his sibling, Keefe.

His memory returned in a flash. He’d been placed in the capsule beside Keefe because they were pretending to be co-mates. Blade hit the awakening cycle. His podling frowned, and then his crimson eyes blinked. A few minutes later, the lid slid back.

"Why did you wake me instead
