Liberated Woman - Betrice Coleman-Sweet
NOW AND THEN
Now, Black people are struggling for equal rights and are free
We are bright and we are filled with integrity.
We fight for our rights and we are brave
But some people remember when Blacks were slaves
We are victims of enslavement, you see
Blacks cared for each other; yes we were and still are a minority
We were treated like animals, beaten and even killed.
We starved with dirty clothes, yet even still
We looked up at the morning sun
With our terrible life and hoped for a better one
To earn all of our rights
We had to struggle and fight
An example put by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
He is the one who helped us to let freedom ring
He is known to us with honor and fame
His legacy still burns like an everlasting flame
We cried, we sighed, we hoped and protested
We even bowed our heads and we got down on our knees.
Because we wanted all inequality to cease
So I hope that day come soon for all equality
So there will be a better world for you and for me.
So when hard times come your way
Don’t just sit there and bow
Think of all the struggling we had to do in the past
And how you can achieve your dream now
So just think this in your head
Of all the victories and triumphs we’ve led
I know who I am and I am proud of who I am and I’m going to let people know out loud
That I am Black and I am Proud.
No one can judge me by my way of living or my face
No one can judge me by my race
They have to judge for what is in the inside, not the outside
We take great joy and pride
We even had a whole month set aside
For all the heroes and heroines who set us on track
Because they wanted everyone in every city, and every state
To know how it feels and what it means to be black
Life may be hard, as though it may
