Social media is the term used for the sharing of thoughts, information, and ideas on the internet through virtual communities. These virtual communities are also called platforms. There are different types of platforms for social media. There are:
■ Photo sharing sites like Instagram and Snapchat
■ Video sharing sites like TikTok and YouTube
■ Social sharing sites like Facebook
■ Blogging sites like Twitter
Many people use social media to connect with others for fun, but you can also use it for your business, to advertise events, and to buy and sell products.
Before you join any type of social media site, make sure you talk to your parents or guardians about it. Many social media sites have rules about how old you need to be to join. For some sites, you need to be 13. For others, you can join with a parent’s permission. Talking about social media with your parents or guardians is key—they will need to know which social media accounts you are using and what you are using them for. Social media is constantly changing. There are several different social media platforms that you can use today—some more popular than others.
