    Part I

Her eyes darted open wide, as she awoke from a deep dreamless sleep. She didn't hear anything out of the ordinary, but her whole body was aware of the presence standing over her. Even though the sleep mask blocked every speck of light, she saw her room with perfect, monochromatic clarity. Cold chills rippled from her scalp to the tips of her toes as gooseflesh prickled her skin. The shadows surrounding her coalesced together to form a solid figure in the doorway of her room. Her mind's eye saw the figure with perfect clarity. The whites of his eyes reflected the dim glow of the streetlight from outside, the too wide smile showed sharp straight teeth as he stared down upon her, and the misshapen mass of a head started a mad hysterical scream welling up deep inside her. With the strength born of carnal self-preservation, she carefully swallowed the scream. Willow did not move except to slowly regulate her breathing, to give the impression she was still asleep. He then silently stepped closer to her, and fear erupted in a raging wildfire, begging her to move, run, get away from this stranger standing over her bed. Her entire body tensed like a taut steel wire as adrenaline gushed through her veins. Willow was now a cornered prey animal, full of desperate energy, willing to fight tooth and nail to the bitter end if necessary. This uninvited predator standing over her would be surprised, she hoped, when she exploded from her bed screaming, hitting, flailing, whatever was needed to get out of here and away from him.

The moment before she was to go full berserker on him, he bent down so close to Willow, she could feel the electricity emanating off him. The corner of her bed near her pillow compressed down under the weight of his hand. She went cold and froze at this unexpected maneuver. Behind the sleep mask, her mind saw the already wide smile stretch Cheshire Cat-like as his teeth shone in the dark. Willow felt her heart thumping with such force, she knew he must see it leaping against her rib cage underneath the blanket. With herculean effort Willow continued to keep her breathing slow and steady.

When she could no longer hold the terrified energy pent up inside her, Willow ripped off the blanket with one hand, tore the sleep mask off with the other and yelled a war cry seasoned soldiers would revel in. She furiously clawed at his face, but her fingers tore through nothing but air.

She looked frantically around her room searching for the miscreant, who only split seconds before was in her room. Her
