Prologue
This book is written for every voting-age person to read, but this Prologue is mainly addressed to the retirees!
Getting to an old age is a blessing in spite of the aching joints when the golden times turn to rusty years. Living long in some discomfort is better than dying young. Also, the longer one lives the more opportunity one has to learn and to gain more experience. The more one experiences the wiser one gets, of course with certain inherent limitations. These limitations include one’s capacity to learn, the range, type and the impact of one’s environment, timing, age and circumstances as they were experienced, to list but a few.
There are obvious signs of aging such as more frequent visits to the doctors than the yearly checkup, and taking longer to recover from the workout than the duration of the exercise. And if you’re over 80 your sense of well-being is replaced by symptoms and after you give up all your bad habits you don’t notice any improvements. You can fill in your own unique signs of aging in your diary at your pleasure, but I don’t think anybody will be interested.
When you think you have retired and made it you may be moving into a convenient rut and going downhill.
Old folks cheer up! All human knowledge is based on experiences! So, saying, The older you are the wiser you are.
is true! So get up out of your chair, start teaching, sharing knowledge while learning from experiences you discovered the hard way to the younger generations so they won’t make the same mistakes. If you are still undecided take a small step forward, write your experiences down, share them and later publish them. Teach new skills, open eyes and minds to new ideas, and educate. Many old people are sitting in a rocking chair just because it moves, but it doesn’t get you anywhere! The rest of your life may be too short to be wasted.
Brains of older people are slower because they know so much. People might not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. According to Dr. Michael Ramscar, the human brain works slower in old age because we store more information over time. It is like your computer when the hard drive gets full it takes longer to access information.
Some older people go upstairs to another room to get something but when they get there, they forget what they came for. It might not be a memory problem, it might be nature’s way of telling you, Need more exercise
. - Instead of taking Prevagen
, it’ll be cheaper to delete some of the unneeded information from your hard drive.
Don’t forget, you have a lot of answers but the problem is that nobody is asking, so tell them anyway. If some of you could sell your valuable experiences many of you could be millionaires!
Life ends when you stop dreaming, hope ends when you stop believing, love ends when you stop caring; and, friendship ends when you stop sharing.
In this spirit I would like to share some of my experiences and acquired knowledge, Venture Capitalists would be delighted to know about or could benefit from, with many parents, teachers, voters, decision makers, leaders and managers. Or perhaps, this book might clarify situations you cannot yet explain. Some of these experiences and observations may not yet have much empirical data to support or prove. Some may also be politically incorrect. Nevertheless, it is well worth more than just mere consideration. Possibly, you might be the one who will prove or disprove my unverified claims.
Best solutions to problems might not be new brilliant ideas, but sometimes by making old and proven methods work!
To be continued in the EPILOGUE!
Introduction
Igrew up during WWII in Central Europe with frequent exposure to air raids, hunger, shootings, and physical conflicts. I lived under occupation by foreign armies, and dug up unexploded landmines in return for warm soup. I was put in political prison, interrogated by the communist secret police and lived under many forms of governments. All of these left me with a lot of unwanted memories and experiences. Yet, in retrospect, they were helpful to put things in different perspectives as they opened my eyes and mind to look beyond the obvious and visible, and also to learn from bad experiences.
- I believe more wisdom comes from living than just reading and studying.
For example, during occupations by different countries and armies I noticed some common denominators besides robbing us blind, taking everything of value including all our weapons and leaving us totally defenseless. With each newly created government, most of them served the often changing occupiers, put the previous leaders in prison, sent them to a Gulag, Concentration or Work camp, or simply eliminated them. Nevertheless, they all went far beyond these steps, the new rulers also penalized their families including their children. Examples: many of the children were also sent to forced labor camps. Any of them showing resistance ended up in uranium or coal mines, or much worse. All were denied regular education. When the boys became 20 they were inducted into the military but instead of military training they were permanently assigned to work duty. Those sons and daughters who didn’t have to suffer the same disastrous fate as their fathers or mothers were simply kicked out of schools, colleges, or universities, just like I was.
It is beyond description and comprehension how evil and inhuman ways some of the unwanted families were dealt with. I’m afraid to describe here any of the gory details of these terrible events which had taken place with some regularity.¹
Historically this terrible treatment of ruling families and their offspring, like kings, tsars and emperors could be explained as any one of the surviving offspring of the family or close relatives could make a legal claim to the throne at any time. However, in my experience there were no royal families involved, just very respected individuals in high positions either in government or in private industries: those who were perceived as possible threats to the new regime because of their popularity. Just as Stalin dealt with some of his best generals after the war was over, by eliminating the most popular ones. - His paranoia in action.
The above mentioned common behavior by oppressive governments puzzled me for many years until I joined the ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corp), served in the military and also worked for a long time in the private industry that included large, medium, small and start-up companies. During these times I noticed that every good and natural leader I encountered and learned to respect had a mother or father in high position. Or at least a grandparent as inheriting certain abilities might skip a generation or two².
Coincidence?
I’m sure there are exceptions but if it isn’t a coincidence, it could be the reason why unwanted leaders’ children are also suppressed, penalized or killed by the oppressive new regime in power.
Maybe, our education and training place too much emphasis on the environmental factors and not enough on the genetic side.
(Did you ever wonder why some ranchers pay so much money for the services of certain bulls to hopefully pass on some of the desired traits to produce better breeds? Just look at the race-horses, where the price is much higher, sometimes hundreds of thousands dollars for breeding to improve performance or just to pass on the desired genes. Stud service to improve breeds in physical appearance, abilities and temperaments is
