    Introduction

These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. —Deuteronomy 6:6-9, ESV

Moses’s inspiring encouragement has gripped your heart. You feel God’s call to minister to your children through all walks of life. However, as you sit down with them before bedtime, perhaps you just don’t know where to start. What part of the Bible will they understand most? Enjoy most? Get the most from? Would a children’s Bible be better? Which children’s Bible should I get?

Perhaps you have already browsed some children’s Bibles. Some may feel too storytime with the appearance of reducing the Scriptures to tales. Without the details, some of these approaches to the Bible may feel simplistic and childish, to the point of being inaccurate and confusing. On the other hand, other attempts may feel too short and dry, leaving out interesting details that might help prompt discussion between you and your child.

In The Story of God for His Children, which is written for reading levels 7 through 12, the Bible is presented in an enjoyable way, abridged yet accurate. Providing a diverse array of scriptures from the Old Testament to the New, this volume aims to spark interest in God's Word and create a sense of spiritual ownership within your child. Owning a Bible and reading it every night will not only encourage spiritual growth, but cultivate confidence in your children to approach the Scriptures and discover its truths for themselves. With continual access to the Word, your children will be properly instructed in the way of our Lord Jesus Christ, providing a solid foundation for their path in life.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. —Proverbs 22:6, ESV

As you read and share these Bible stories with your family, you will be given an opportunity to not only present the Scriptures but encourage your child to respond to what they have learned. As you and your family explore the Word, your children will become invested in their own spiritual journey. While you share your faith with your family, you may also find yourself enjoying the simple truths of Scripture all over again!

As you guide your child in the Christian walk, have faith! Your heartfelt prayers and the edification of Scripture will have an impact on your child’s heart, whether the fruits are apparent immediately or not. Encourage discourse and embrace the questions that your family will inevitably have. Through these challenges, you and your family will grow in grace and maturity in the Faith. God’s work has only just begun!

Chapter 1: The Creation of the World and Human History

    God Creates the World

    Genesis 1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Our planet didn’t look at all like the planet we know today. It wasn’t yet shaped. Our earth was just empty space—a mess of particles floating in the dark. Like a bird warming her nest, the Spirit of God hovered over the world.

On the first day of creation, God said, Let there be light!

And there was light. God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and He called the darkness Night.

On the second day of creation, God said, Let there be a space between the water that will divide the water above from the water below!

And there was a great expanse. This space separated waters above from waters below, sketching out the areas we call the sky and the ocean today. God called this expanse Heaven.

On the third day of creation, God said, Let there be dry land and oceans!

And there were continents, mountains, seas, and rivers. God saw that the water and the dry land were good. He called the dry land Earth, and He called the water Oceans.

God also said, Let the earth grow plants and trees. Each of them will have seeds to make more just like them.

And there were many different plants and trees that were able to create seeds and make new plants and trees just like them. God saw that it was good.

On the fourth day of creation, God said, Let there be lights in the sky to show when it is day and night!

And there were two big lights. One big light shone in the day. One smaller light shone at night. He also made the stars! God put these lights in the Heavens to show when it was day and night. God saw that it was good.

On the fifth day of creation, God said, Let there be water creatures and flying creatures!

And there were all kinds of fish and birds. God saw that it was good. He blessed the animals saying, From now on, you will multiply and fill the seas and the earth!

On the sixth day of creation, God said, Let there be many kinds of animals that roam the earth.

And there all kinds of animals in many shapes and sizes. God saw that it was good, but He wasn’t done yet!

God said, Let us make man. He is going to be like us with an eternal soul. He will be able to imagine and create new things. He will be able to rule the earth we made. He will use and take care of this world—the fish, the birds, the insects, and all of the animals.

So God created man, and then woman, in His own image. And
