    About the Author

    Introduction

My mother was the most influential person in my life. If it weren’t for her, I would never have found my love for medicine. My mother was a young parent, and by the age of twenty-one she had already had three young children. When I was seven, my parents divorced. At this time, my mother decided that she wanted to make a better life for her children, and so she decided to go back to school for nursing. My mother always instilled in us the value of getting a good education; I remember at night we would all sit down and do our homework together. I would also constantly sneak to her bookshelf and engulf myself in her nursing books. I loved learning the language of medicine, and learning the names of body structures and what they do. It was at this time that I realized I wanted to be a doctor.

At the age of twelve, I lost my mother to complications of lupus, and two wonderful women took over raising me, my grandmother and great-aunt. It was at this time in my life that I began to enjoy spending time with seniors. I remember watching the news with my grandmother and asking her opinion about every topic. To me, she was the smartest person in the world. My grandmother and great-aunt both taught me the importance of education, how to be resilient, and most of all, how to be independent.

I grew up in the small town
