    Canadian Composers

    Joseph Quesnel (1746-1809)

Quesnel was a native of Saint-Malo, a seaport in Brittany. Its inhabitants were famous (or perhaps I should say notorious) seafarers, and Quesnel was no exception. He visited Pondicherry, Madagascar, French Guiana, several islands of the Antilles, and Brazil.

Then he decided to live in Bordeaux but continued to sail. In partnership with his uncle, he imitated the fabled Sinbad the Sailor, engaging in trading voyages.

He engaged in commerce in partnership with his wife’s step-father Among other things, he exported furs to France and imported wine.

He composed a musical comedy entitled Colas et Colinette. It is a prose drama punctuated with occasional arietas. This is considered the first musical drama written in Canada.

He also started to compose a musical comedy entitled Lucas et Cécile. He died before
