    ESSENTIAL OIL CONTRAINDICATIONS PAGE 2

    Essential Oil Contraindications

    Definition of Contraindication:

Suggests or indicates that a particular technique or drug should not be used in the case in question.

    The Medicinal Definition is:

Something such as a symptom or condition that makes a particular treatment or procedure inadvisable. A contraindication is a condition or factor that serves as a reason to withhold a certain medical treatment due to the harm that it would cause the patient. Some contraindications are

absolute, meaning that there are no reasonable circumstances for undertaking a course of action.

For example: those who may be at high risk for complications, the risks outweigh the benefits. Pregnancy is considered a high risk for certain procedures or drug administration.

A procedure or drug in a specific situation should not be used because it may be harmful to the person.

    Relative Contraindication:

Relative contraindication means that caution should be used when two drugs or procedures are used together.

Any condition that renders a particular line of treatment improper or undesirable

    Essential Oil Contraindications

Persons with high blood pressure should use caution when using very stimulating essential oils, the same goes for stimulating herbs or spices. A few Essential Oils to be aware of include:

Rosemary, Red Thyme and Sage. These should be AVOIDED due to their stimulating effects known as hypertensive.

Some Essential Oils may be irritating to the skin. Included in this list are: Basil, Lemon,

Lemongrass, Lemon Verbena, Melissa, Peppermint, Thyme, Tea Tree (Melaleuca), Cinnamon,

Cinnamon Leaf, Cloves, Fennel and Siberian Fir. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to breaking out, AVOID using these essential oils or use sparingly. If you feel the need to use them, make sure you have taken the proper precautions for dilution ratios.

This list of essential oils is NOT recommended to be used in the bath. Water may cause these and other essential oils to have an intense burning effect. If you are prone to Allergic

Reactions, AVOID these essential oils as well.

CAUTION: Essential oils that are photosensitive may increase the skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Avoid using photosensitive essential oils if you are being exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light. The following is a short list of known essential oils that are photosensitive: Angelica, Bergamot, Cumin, Lemon, Lime, Orange and Verbena. Using these essential oils during exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light can cause burn marks to appear up to three days after the exposure. Bergamot is particularly photosensitive and may cause burning with very little exposure time to the sun.

Use of essential oils for children, frail or elderly adults should be in a highly diluted form.

Misconception comes in thinking that if a little bit is this good then a whole lot more has to be

    better!

MORE IS NOT BETTER when using Essential Oils.

Essential oils can be fun and rewarding to work with if used in a safe and responsible

manner. Always check the above cautions and contraindications before sharing your enthusiasm with your clients, customers, family and friends.

    ESSENTIAL OIL CONTRAINDICATIONS PAGE 4

Do not use the same essential oil or blend continuously for more than three to four weeks. Continued use of some essential oils can cause liver damage. Take a two week break before

resuming use. Always seek the direction of your doctor or health professional when using Essential Oils.

Do not use essential oils on cancer patients or those seriously ill without supervision of a medical practitioner.

Do not use an essential oil in its Neat form, meaning without diluting. Read the precautions and sensitivity of each essential oil before using. Always put safety first when using oils. If burning

    results

DO NOT wash off with water. Use your carrier or any cooking oil available to immediately dilute the essential oil to stop the burning effect.

DO NOT ingest or place essential oils straight or blended into any orifice including, the mouth, ears, eyes, nostrils, vagina, penis or anus.

DO NOT diagnose or treat with essential oils if you are not a licensed professional.

    ESSENTIAL OIL CAUTIONS PAGE 6

Aroma therapy is becoming a household word. The use of essential oils is becoming very prevalent and being used by many professionals and non-professionals. Essential oils are easy to purchase. There is little or no training on how to use and properly take care of these essential oils. The range of quality in essential oils goes from very poor to highly
