Chapter 1 - What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is simply the practice of using volatile plant oils for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Essential oils play an important role in aromatherapy practices. The term aromatherapy was coined in the 20th century, but essential oil usage dates back thousands of years.
An essential oil comes from the pure essence of a plant and when properly used, they offer a great deal of benefit. Essential oils are key in aromatherapy recipes, but these recipes will also include other natural ingredients such as liquid carrier oils, cold pressed vegetable oils, herbs, clays, sea salts, mud, and more. Any number of these ingredients can be part of the aromatherapy recipe.
The use of any synthetic ingredients is not recommended in holistic aromatherapy. Choose the highest quality natural ingredients you can find. Using synthetic ingredients or essential oils that are not of therapeutic value (more about that later) eliminates all the benefits.
