    You’re so stupid!

    Me? You’re the one who had to go and cancel our trip.

    "I only cancelled it because you hate surprises."

    I don’t hate surprises! I hate it when you double schedule for a surprise! A slap echoed around the room as he slapped her. Don’t do that!

    Me? You’re the one always slapping me. He argued back. She sighed.

    Slapping is a strong word. Though her cheek stung, she did not wish to admit that it was true. I hate it when you do that to me!

    You invited it.

    How? How in the world does pointing out that I was overscheduled have anything to do with inviting that slap?! She yelled, her voice gaining rage and something of a vibrato.

    Oh, just forget it! I’m going out for a pint. He grabbed his coat. And don’t you even think of going out while I’m gone. She rubbed her cheek lightly. He punched her in the face before grumbling to himself about weak women.

    Emma sniffled as she heard the door slam shut. In only a year, her marriage of 10 years had slid so far downhill that she felt it was worthless to try. Her husband, Aiden, had a bit of a temper. She’d known it going into the marriage.

    However, it got worse when he began drinking heavily last year. She still had bruises from their fight the week before. The day before, he’d gotten even more physical with her. He slammed her into the wall.

    She couldn’t see her back, but from how tender it was, she probably had bruises there.

    She sighed, touching her face gently. Her hand came away with blood from her nose. A sniffle wouldn’t hold it back for long.

    As she hurried to the bathroom, she held her nose tightly
