About this ebook

Just when Andrew and Sandra Chillings think they can settle into a blissful marriage, Karen Chuckles enters their lives, pretending to be the perfect tenant for their rental property. Sandra, taken in by Karen's innocence, goes against her husband's wishes and offers Karen support even though their new tenant does everything to keep her at an emotional distance.

No one really knows Karen's history except Mary Ann Peters, her one true friend. However, something is strange about their relationship, and Andrew Chillings is determined to expose it. Sandra feels her husband is too hard on their shy tenant and does everything in her power to protect Karen from his scrutiny.

Karen takes advantage of the situation and concocts a web of lies that shakes the foundation of the Chillingses' marriage. Her fabrications not only entrap the Chillingses, but anyone who attempts to play the "Good Samaritan."

Will Sandra's acts of kindness cause her to lose the man she loves? Or will Sandra see the light before disaster strikes? If Karen's manipulations work out as planned, Sandra will not only lose her marriage, but a lot more.

    The Escape

I won’t go back. They’ll have to kill me first. Molly trembled and yelled as she declared allegiance to her friend. I tell you, they won’t stop until they discover the truth.

Mary Ann listened in silence, too afraid to withstand her friend’s ranting. Ten years earlier, Molly escaped from the most secured mental facility in the state. Mary Ann remembered the entire plot. She was there as Molly made her way across the facility’s campus. She remembered the victory chant: Free at last. Free at last.

Karen Chuckles is my name now, Molly declared defiantly on her first day of freedom. Never mention or think about Molly Jenkins again. If you do, you know what’ll happen.

From that moment, Mary Ann etched the name Karen Chuckles in her memory. She and her friend had new lives, and as destined by fate, their unforeseen wandering led them straight into the lives of Andrew and Sandra Chillings.

    Chapter 1

Sandra’s heart raced as she carefully caressed each wedding picture. Things turned out perfectly on her wedding day...better than she imagined. She married the greatest man in the world, and their friends and family poured in by the groves to shower them with love and support. Just thinking about that day made Sandra feel overwhelmed and full. Huh, she thought as her eyes scanned the photos, I don’t know how I captured such a fine specimen.

As she flipped through the pages, each picture made a personal statement. The first one, however, had a flare that outranked the rest. She glowed as her eyes examined the photo of their first kiss as a married couple. Sandra recalled her husband’s embrace. Drew had been so tender and passionate with her in the midst of the congregation, and she wasn’t ashamed to admit she relished every bit of that sacred moment.

The remaining pictures were of her favorite people...Pastor Phillips, Mother Perkins, Mother Moses; the list seemed endless. However, she couldn’t keep her eyes off the man God gave her. Not only was he handsome, he had integrity, and she was willing to follow him anywhere.

After their honeymoon to Hawaii, they returned to Drew’s home to live. Sandra didn’t mind leaving her house, the one that fitted her to perfection. Being Drew’s wife was her priority, so much so, she vowed to live in a shack if necessary.

Familiar hands massaged her shoulders and pulled her back into the present. Immediately, a huge smile spread across her face.

Are you still feeling the vibes from the wedding? Drew asked, pleased that his wife of three months willingly responded to his touches.

I sure am. I feel like I’m living in a fairy tale, and I can’t wake up. I love being Mrs. Andrew Mark Chillings.

I tried to get you to see the light a long time ago, but you wouldn’t give me the time of day. You said you only wanted my friendship, but I knew my charm and irresistible good looks would win you over. Look at this. Drew flexed his body as he paraded in front of his wife. You know you secretly hungered for this.

Sandra threw a piece of paper at him and missed. I’m not thinking about you Mr. Chillings. You’re lucky I didn’t marry someone else.

Drew bent over Sandra’s shoulder and gave her a kiss. I love you Missy, and I’m going to do everything in my power to make you happy.

Sandra placed the wedding album on the coffee table and shifted in her seat as Drew’s baritone voice ran down her spine. I love you too. God outdid Himself when He sent you to me. No one else could even come close to fitting the bill.

Drew’s chest extended as he blushed with pride. Sandra always knew how to boost a man’s ego. Drew held his wife tightly as he glanced into her eyes. He waited on God, and the wait was well worth it. There in his arms was a perfect angel, the missing piece of the puzzle to his life.

Satan watched the interchange between Drew and his wife. The sight of the Chillingses living in marital bliss infuriated him, and he vowed to dismantle the love nest as quickly as possible. Since those previously assigned to Sandra’s case failed, he felt obligated to evaluate the situation. He didn’t want to take one of senior ranking out of the game of major events and place him on this case, but those of inferior status couldn’t handle the job.

Who can I trust to get the job done? he walked around in circles, scratching his head. I need someone who believes failure is not an option and has the fortitude to make his beliefs happen. He immediately thought of Mind Deceiver.

Mind Deceiver has tremendous skills, possessing saintly patience. If I assign him to this case, it will delay other events; but things are moving too swiftly with Sandra Michelle Chillings, and we must stop her now. She was never supposed to marry Andrew Chillings, but since I trusted an inferior to deal with a major issue, my plans collapsed. Now Sandra may discover her destiny. If she does, the kingdom of darkness will suffer a major blow. Sandra or that husband of hers won’t fall prey to blatant sin. They’re too cautious for that. I’ll use my tool of deception to deal with them. If I target Sandra and destroy that unified front, they’ll lose their power.

He chuckled as he thought of his persuasive powers. I’ll use the same strategy I used in the Garden of Eden. It took some effort, but I convinced Eve that God was holding out on them, shielding them from their full potential. I told her if they ate the fruit, their eyes would open, and they would be as gods, knowing good and evil. After my stellar performance, Eve ate the fruit and convinced her husband to do the same. From that moment, the world changed, and I’ve worked havoc since. He smiled as he thought of the parallels. If I convinced Eve to defy God, I know I can do the same with Sandra. No, I don’t need to invent anything new; using the same scheme will get the same results.

Hmm, he announced to himself, I’ll need human help in this little caper, he paused and stroked his head. I know the perfect person for the job. Molly Jenkins...um, I mean Karen Chuckles. He snickered as the thought of Karen Chuckles zipped across his mind. This plan will require extra effort, but in the end, it will be effort well spent. I’ve seen enough, he huffed. I’ll allow the Chillingses to bask in their little love den for the time being, but before long, I will make sure their love den turns into the house that hell built.

    Chapter 2

After Sandra brushed her teeth and combed her hair, she shifted to her business mode. It reminded Drew of her role at Jones and Associates.

Drew, I’ve been thinking, she approached her husband with an air of authority.

    What about hon?

It’s time for us to find a renter for my house. It doesn’t make sense to pay two mortgages when one of the homes isn’t being used.

That sounds like a plan. When are you going to place an ad?

I’ll place one tomorrow if that’s okay with you.

Tomorrow sounds great. Do you need my help with anything?

No, I think I can manage. I do want you present for the final interview.

No problem. Let me know when you need me.

Drew smiled as his wife shifted back to her domestic mode. She flitted from one corner of their bedroom to the other in her revealing, red nightgown. He tried to concentrate on her words, but the scenery was irresistible. Her words slowly faded in the background with every step she took.

What are you trying to do to me woman? he groaned.

What do you mean? she laughed, feigning innocence.

Drew pulled his wife on his lap and nibbled on her ear. Thank you God, Drew thought as he embraced her. I still can’t believe You blessed me with such a jewel.

Without their knowledge, Mind Deceiver slipped into their atmosphere. Satan assigned him to the Sandra Chillings’ case, and he wanted to start immediately. He meticulously studied his subject and her spouse. Thus far, he only saw two dedicated Christians in love. I’m not in a hurry, he reasoned, I have plenty of time to stockpile the ammunition I need.

He passed by the bedroom mirror and glanced at their reflections. Personal failure is not an option, and no couple, regardless how godly, will change that. The others failed because they don’t have my qualifications. Given time, Mind Deceiver mused, all good men fail...given time.

Mind Deceiver left the premises but lingered above their house before returning to his post. I know how the boss feels about this case, so I’ll gather more information before implementing a plan. He doesn’t have to worry about Sandra Michelle Chillings any longer. She’s in capable hands now. Since I’m qualified to handle the major leaguers, I’m more than qualified to handle the Chillingses. Their little playhouse looks sturdy, but if I play my cards right, this playhouse and everything in it will come tumbling down.

Sandra had three scheduled showings within a month of placing the ad. The first showing was with a young couple. Sandra opened the door as they approached her veranda. Before she could offer a greeting, three little boys ran past her and almost knocked her down.

Timmy, Jerry and Cain, get back here! the young woman yelled at the top of her voice. Johnny, you better handle your boys, she screamed at the young man standing beside her.

He excused himself and ran inside after them. It took about five minutes before he returned. I’m sorry, he looked at Sandra as he held his arms around the three struggling boys.

Sterling, the young woman said abruptly as she extended her hand towards Sandra. We’re Mr. and Mrs. Sterling.

Sandra smiled, trying to ignore the youngest boy who was kicking at her.

Glad to meet you Mrs. Sterling. Please, follow me.

After the first five minutes, Sandra could barely hear herself talk. The kids ran through the house wildly, and neither parent could regain control. Even though the showing lasted twenty minutes, it seemed like hours. I’m going to pull my hair out if they don’t leave, Sandra smiled outwardly but screamed inwardly. As soon as the couple and their children left, she scratched their names off the list. Can’t rent the house to them, she sighed, if I do, I won’t have a house left.

Mr. and Mrs. Hicks arrived at the showing thirty minutes late. Sandra was on her way out when the elderly couple pulled into the driveway. The woman jumped out of the car and approached Sandra without waiting on her husband.

Mrs. Chillings, I’m sorry we’re late. My husband is never on time for anything. If he had anything to do with it, he would be late for his funeral.

Sandra smiled and tried to hide a chuckle.

Don’t listen to that old broad, the elderly man hobbled around the car to where the two women stood. I wouldn’t be late if I didn’t have to put up with so much nagging. Nagging weighs you down, he told Sandra while rolling his eyes at his wife.

Sandra extended her hand towards Mr. Hicks to diffuse the building tension. Oh, it’s no problem. I’m not in a hurry. Come in and let me show you the house.

After seeing the place, Mr. Hicks voiced his approval. This is just what we need Edna. I like it.

I think it’s too large, she looked at Sandra apologetically. I love it, but we’re too old to take care of this property.

That’s your excuse for everything, Mr. Hicks huffed as he turned to leave.

I’m sorry Sandra, but it’s a bit much for us.

I understand. Thanks for coming by. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Mr. Hicks slammed the door to the passenger’s side of the car. His wife hopped in on the driver’s side and waved goodbye. As the car rolled away at a snail’s pace, the couple argued. Mrs. Hicks seemed to have the upper hand. During her last glimpse of them, Sandra saw Mr. Hicks place both hands over his ears. Guess that’s the last I’ll see of them.

The third potential renter, an attractive woman in her late thirties, came by Sandra’s house three weeks after the listing. Sandra sensed that she was shy, but she knew exactly what she wanted.

Hi, I’m Sandra, and I’m the owner, Sandra said to the young lady as she approached the doorway.

    Hi. I’m Karen. Karen Chuckles.

Well, how are you today Karen? Sandra asked eagerly, hoping this woman and her house would make a perfect match.

Wonderful. Thank you for asking. I read about your house in the newspaper, and I wanted to see the inside. I’m already in love with the outside, so you don’t have to sell me on that.

Sandra smiled as she led the young lady into the living room. So Karen, tell me about your plans for renting.

Well, I live in an apartment on the other side of town. For the last three months, I’ve been house hunting. I plan to rent for a year then I want to buy.

Sounds like you have a solid plan.

Yes, it’s been on my mind for some time. Like I said before, I love the outside of your home, and the location is perfect.

Sandra showed Karen the entire house, taking extreme care to point out the house’s unique craftsmanship. When the showing was over, Karen pulled out her wallet to write a check for the deposit and the first month rent.

Wow, looks as if you made up your mind. Do you need a few days to think about things?

No, I’ve always loved this house. Seeing the inside just validated how much I want to live here.

Before I decide, I want you to meet my husband. I want his approval before we finalize things. Can you come by the house tomorrow afternoon?

I’m not busy at seven. Will that time suit you?

    Seven sounds perfect.

I’ll see you tomorrow, Karen yelled over her shoulder as she unlocked her car door.

I’ll see you at seven o’clock sharp.

Karen waited until Sandra was out of view before giving herself a devilish pat on the shoulder. I did it, she gleamed. I finally found the perfect place for the two of us, and by this time tomorrow, we’ll have a sealed deal.

Filled with excitement, Sandra raced home to tell Drew about her encounter with Karen. As she entered the house, aromas from the kitchen filled her nostrils. Drew had an apron wrapped around his waist and a towel thrown over his shoulder, preparing one of Sandra’s favorite dishes.

Wow, we’re having steak salad tonight. Splendid.

I figured you would be tired after running errands all day, so I left work early and started dinner.

Sandra threw her purse on the chair, ran to her husband and kissed him passionately.

What did I do to deserve this? he squeezed the words out once he caught his breath.

You’re too thoughtful. Thanks for preparing dinner.

Well, if it’ll get me this reaction, I’ll be responsible for dinner every night.

Sandra smiled as she released her grip. Don’t test me Mr. Chillings. I may take you up on your offer. She patted him on the hip and headed to the bathroom to wash her hands. When she returned, Drew was sitting at the table waiting for her.

I’ll bless the food, Drew offered. Sandra listened as he thanked God for the food and their lives together as a married couple. After hearing amen, Sandra took a healthy bite of her salad.

Drew, this is awesome. You outdid yourself this time.

Thanks hon. I’m glad you like it, he paused, wiping the salad dressing from his chin. Did you get any prospects for the house today?

As a matter of fact, I met a young lady who I think would be perfect for the house. She’s in her thirties, and she wants to rent a house for a year before purchasing her own. She appears very reserved.

That sounds great. What did you tell her?

I asked her to come over tomorrow to meet you so we could make the final decision. Is that okay?

I don’t have any plans. I’ll be available.

They engaged in small talk throughout the remainder of the meal. When they finished, Sandra cleared the table. Drew rose to help her, but she sent him to his favorite spot to relax. Afterwards, she joined Drew on the sofa. The thought of finding a potential renter so quickly thrilled her.

Karen Chuckles seems so nice. I think she’ll be a perfect match for my house. She smiled as she rested her head on Drew’s shoulder. They both sat in silence, watching the evening news. Drew lost in his thoughts and Sandra in hers.

The doorbell rang at seven o’clock sharp. As Sandra peered out the peephole, she gazed directly into Karen Chuckles’ face. She smiled as she opened the door.

Hi Karen. Did you have any problems finding the place?

No. You gave perfect directions. I would have arrived earlier, but traffic was hectic.

Your timing is perfect. Please have a seat while I get my husband.

Sandra headed to the back of the house while Karen sat and scanned the Chillingses’ pictures. When her eyes fell on their wedding picture, she smiled approvingly. That picture looks like artwork chiseled to perfection. It’s impeccable. She started to move closer to get a better look when a voice made her halt in her tracks.

Hi, my name is Drew, Drew extended his hand towards Karen as she forced hers out in return.

I’m Karen, and I’m interested in renting the house your wife showed me yesterday.

"Yes, she mentioned that. I guess we’ll chat before we make the final decision. That house is special
