Tod, could you hand me my laptop? I have to let my toenails dry, Jen called across the room to her boyfriend. The two had been together since middle school and had been friends long before that. He was in many respects her vision of the perfect guy; handsome, athletic, intelligent, and caring. She became so lost in thoughts of their history together that it took her a minute to realize he had neither responded nor done what she had asked. Tod?

She turned her head and noticed Tod peering out through her window blinds. Jesus, Tod! Stop being a creeper! Tod jumped, his large frame nearly pulling the blinds from the walls.

I’m sorry, babe. You’ve got new neighbors moving in across the street. They’ve got a lot of really weird stuff with them. I’m pretty sure I saw a sword in there, he paused, scratching the back of his neck. And a bunch of weird boxes.

Yeah, my parents said they’re Romanian or something. They seem nice enough.

Tod reached into his pants pocket to check his phone. Moving at 10PM on a weeknight? Isn’t that odd?

Jen frowned. They’ve been moving a few pieces in and out overnight the last three nights or so. I think they might do shift work. She had to admit it seemed a bit odd.

That’s a sweet ass car, though, Tod pointed to the sports car parked in the driveway. The paint was a shiny, almost mirror-like chrome, and the vehicle doors swung upwards instead of outwards. Whatever shift work lets me have that piece with the suicide doors, sign me up for.

They’re probably doctors, Jen stated matter-of-factly. She turned her head back towards Tod and smiled. Let’s go ask them.

Tod’s face contorted strangely, a look that was a mixture of confusion, worry, and irritation. He had always been uncomfortable interacting with new people. What, now?

Jen popped up off the bed. Yeah, why not? Maybe they need help moving. It’s not like you’re helping me study anyway. And if we’re doing a good deed, maybe my dad will let you stay a little longer before kicking you out, she batted her eyes suggestively.

    What about your toenails?

Jen smiled. I just wanted you to get my laptop for me. Let’s go!

The couple raced down the stairs and out the front door, barely stopping to acknowledge Jen’s father, Larry.  If she comes back pregnant, you come back dead, Larry called out to them without looking up from his paper. Jen ignored the comment and walked down the driveway and into the street.

As she stepped up onto the curb on the opposite side, she took in the sight of the house. For as long as she could remember, the house had been unoccupied. Stories abounded about a witch who used to live there and would kidnap local children. Jen’s father had always told her a crazy old woman who hoarded cats had lived there before. The lawn was overgrown, with multiple patches of varying shades of green and unruly bushes on either side of the paved stone driveway. The walkway leading from the driveway to the front porch was likewise stone, with small patches of weeds growing up between cracks in the foundation. An iron fence, coated in peeling black paint, surrounded the yard with the exception of an opening for the driveway The exterior of house itself consisted of a stone foundation and timber framework, and Jen pictured the house being more at home in a rural German town than amongst the more modern estates which comprised her neighborhood. The construction gave it a whimsical feel, or at least it would, were it not for the dark charcoal gray paint and black shutters. Combined with the unruly yard, the dark coloration imbued the place with a mysterious and foreboding aura.  Jen had to admit it could be a perfectly charming house with a few coats of
