Bheki V. Gamedze, together with his wife Shari L Blackwell-Gamedze are the Founding Senior Pastors of New Africa Gateway Church, in Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He is the Presiding Apostle of the Hope International Apostolic Network, which covers a growing number of Ascension gift ministers in several nations. Apostle Bheki Gamedze is also an active member of the Council of African Apostles.

Bheki has been in the ministry since 1978. During this time, he has planted and pastored in several churches and ministered extensively on Radio and satellite TV, including TBN Africa. He travels globally as a Conference Speaker and a Prophetic and Apostolic minister of the Word.

First of all, I dedicate this book to the person who has always stood by my side over our thirty years of marriage and constantly encouraged me to write: Shari L Blackwell-Gamedze my dear wife, who is also an anointed minister in her own right.

I also dedicate it to our adult children: Chloe, Sizwe, Ayanda, Simile and Welile. They have made untold sacrifices as both their mother and I served the Lord in ministry over the years, especially in their formative years.

Foreword

Not enough emphasis has been placed on the Holy Spirit in recent times. The church I grew up in did not teach much at all about Him.

They only went as far as to say that He dwells in each believer. No relationship or experience with Him was encouraged. We were only enthusiastic about walking with Jesus. The Holy Spirit was a vague subject that was rarely addressed, except to indirectly ridicule or criticise those Pentecostals.

I got born again in that church as the twelve-year-old kid of a preacher. By the time I was sixteen, I was bored and disillusioned about the Christianity I saw around me. The things that concerned me most were the religious legalism and general misery that those who said they were Christians displayed.

Then it was the huge disconnect between the Christians I would read about in the Bible, and most preachers and Christians I knew. Why was there such a big difference? Why did we not see the great manifestations of God that the early believers saw? What was it that enabled them to serve the Lord with such power? What empowered them even to face persecution even to the point of death itself, with joy?

Did we have a different Jesus to them? What was missing?

This quest sent me on a search beyond the confines of the walls of my local church, even though my natural father, Rev Dr. Aaron B. Gamedze, was the founding senior pastor of the main church in the capital city, and president of the denomination at that time. A hunger began to grow in me to find the truth that would bring me to experience what that first church experienced.

In the course of my search, God sent across my path a very humble, European, Portuguese-speaking missionary named Hans Cashquero. He was a quirky, nerdy, balding, diminutive man from Mozambique in his fifties when I met him. To my surprise, he took a liking to me and started to disciple me. He was not a pastor. During these times, we started studying the Bible together, even regarding the Holy Spirit. We would meet on Saturday afternoons. I was curious and my heart began to thirst even more for what I read, and what Jesus taught about Him.

Brother Hans (as he liked me to call him) believed in the baptism into the Holy Spirit, and had experienced it. At first, our studies were just an hour long. Before long, we would be digging into the word for three or four hours at a time. Soon, my quest would be fulfilled, when I personally experienced the baptism into the Holy Spirit, and my life was forever changed.

It was this hunger, for the New Testament Holy Spirit Empowered Life, which was behind my decision to attend Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the USA, after attending a Pentecostal Holiness Bible College in Lagos, Nigeria. How that all actually happened is a story for another day, but I was drawn by the fact that the Oral Robert’s ministry had healings, miracles, and other powerful manifestations of the Holy Spirit, unlike most of the ministries I had been exposed to up until then. I was fascinated by how God used him so powerfully, even to the point of instructing him to build a Christian University.

Over a long period of time I have gradually learned to live the Holy Spirit Empowered Life. My progress has not always been good, I must confess. At times, I have made rapid strides. Sadly, at other times, to be honest, I have regressed. I am the first to admit that I have not yet arrived at mastering it completely. My wife and children will attest to that. It is a growth process you do not arrive at overnight. I am still growing even though I have been in ministry now for over 40 years. This is a daily pursuit. Even though I have not arrived at living it perfectly (I might never!), I hope that what I have learned can help you enter into, and grow in, this exciting promised lifestyle of the believer.

"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."

(Philippians 3:13,14)

There are vital truths I want to share with you in this book. Life can be tough. To live the Christ life in the real world is an incredibly demanding challenge. It is a challenge God never intended for us to undertake without His grace and help. This is why He sent the Holy Spirit - the Helper.

This book is for the believer who wants understanding about the Holy Spirit empowered life, and desires to live it.

After making Jesus Christ your personal Saviour and Lord, the next steps on the Sonship journey are to be baptised in water and to receive the baptism into the Holy Spirit.
