    THE BABY LAMB pushed closer against his mother, pressing his face into her wool. It was ages since his last drink and he was terribly hungry. His mother had been groaning and panting when she lay down, and now she was completely still, not making a sound. Some big, black birds were hopping nearer and nearer, watching with their dark, gleaming eyes. Then one rushed in and struck his mother’s nose, leaving a bleeding cut, but still she didn’t move. The lamb bleated loudly, struggled up on his wobbly legs and shook himself.

    Early that morning, Jill jumped out of her warm bed, pulled on some clothes, and rushed to the kitchen. She loved going out with her dad in the mornings, especially at lambing time. He was already outside getting the truck ready, so she pushed two slices of bread into the toaster and gulped down a glass of milk. It could be a long morning if there were any problems with the lambing ewes.

    As they bumped over the frosty grass, Jill carefully scanned the paddock for any ewes standing on their own. That was a sure sign something was wrong, because she knew sheep usually stayed close together.
