CHAPTER 1
A picture containing text Description automatically generated''Randy! Randy! Randy!'' Rose kept calling from the dining-room with no response forthcoming. Food was already served, and she was seated beside Thomas. They both looked at each other in a way to show that a struggle which they seem to be battling with was not yet over. They look somewhat tired about it but Rose still got up and walked sluggishly to the staircase while Thomas looked at her in a subdued manner.
Randy was still lying on the bed. He was awake, and had heard his mom, Rose calling him but choose not to respond because he knew why she was calling him. He was facing the wall. The looks on his face shows how dejected he was. He couldn't hold back tears as they keep dropping from his eyes. From just a glance, one would notice he barely slept throughout the night. He was beginning to get so tired of the life he was trying so hard to live. Every day of his life seemed like a struggle. Just going out, especially to school felt like going to a war zone with no weapon for one to defend himself. He had been doing this, and each time he did, he returned home more crushed than he was earlier before he left.
He knew his mom, Rose was calling him to come have breakfast so he could go to school, but how could he go to school when the school seemed like the deadliest place to him? How could he go to school when every moment he spent to school felt like a horror movie playing repeatedly, again and again to his greatest displeasure? His parents knew what he was going through, and they have done all they could to make things better for him, but it isn't working out. Not like things were all that better for them because they have their own similar issues from time to time, but they were adults, they got to meet adults, and not all adults will treat a fellow adult the way a kid will treat a fellow kid. Unless very few that would still take it out on them sometimes, but it wasn't as frequent as the case was with Randy. Also, Rose and Thomas sometimes notice kids like Randy in the neighborhood using ill words that are very disrespectful at them, but they don't take it that much to heart because they knew they were kids and were ignorant of what they were doing.
Randy was still lying on the bed, facing the wall and sobbing when a gentle knock was heard at the door. The knock repeated itself in the same manner, but Randy never responded. Rose now opened the door. She remained standing at the entrance and looking at Randy in a manner that showed she was totally crushed. She now walked gently to sit beside him on the bed, ''hey, don't tell me you still cry over this issue we both know we should be used to by now,'' Rose said in the calmest tone she could ever come up with. She kept looking at Randy as her words seemed to have no effect on him. He continued sobbing as if he had heard nothing that she had said. ''Hey, it's alright, it's alright my boy,'' Rose mustered as she started cleaning the tears in his eyes. ''I can't just get used to it. I try every day. I try mom, but it's just not working,'' Randy finally replied. ''I understand Randy, trust me, I really do. You know I and your dad are doing all we can to make things better. We even have to relocate from where we were to get you a new environment and a new school. It will be very difficult for us to leave this state now because of your dad's job, but you know he also wouldn't mind quitting just to make things lighter for you. He is currently looking for another job in another state, you just have to hold on a bit. As soon as he gets a better job that could keep us going, we will move. My own job wouldn't be a problem because I can apply for a transfer. Just endure a little more,'' Rose explained. She and Thomas are doing all they could to leave the state they are living in, and as soon as things worked out, they would be moving to another place, maybe a place where their color wouldn't seem off. ''I just can't go to school today, mom. Please, allow me to stay home today,'' Randy begged. The looks on his face felt like someone that was going to drown in a river any moment he left the house to school. Rose understood those looks. She nodded in affirmation, ''you can stay, now come here my boy,'' she opened her arms, Randy sat immediately and hugged her. They later left the room for the dining-room to join Thomas
