    A Vacation with Dad - A.P. Hernández

    CHAPTER 1

    Hugo couldn’t be happier.

    He’s beside himself with joy.

This summer, he’s going on vacation.

He’s not going camping, he’s not going to the beach and he’s not even going to the mountains.

    Not at all.

Hugo’s going with his father―just the two of them―on an adventure.

Hugo’s father is called Augustine and he’s a truck driver. This means he travels a lot. When he grows up, Hugo wants to be a truck driver too so he can see the world.

I’ve got a delivery to make in Germany, son, he told Hugo this morning. Why don’t you come with me?

Hugo didn’t need to be asked twice. He’s already packing his suitcase.

    His mother’s helping him.

It’ll be cold there, Hugo, she says, folding up a warm hat, a very ugly wool sweater, and a jacket. You’ll need lots of socks! No, not those, the thick ones... Yes, yes, exactly. I don’t want your feet to get cold!

Calcetines, Invierno, Caliente, Azul, Lana, Bebé

But, Mom, it’s really hot! Hugo points out the window. I’ll suffocate!

His mother smiles as she professionally stuffs some socks into the suitcase.

That’s here in Murcia. It’s always hot here. You’ll thank me when you get to Germany.

Hugo’s very nervous because, in all his eight years, he’s never been outside Spain.

His trips have been limited to Murcia, Granada and Valencia. Oh, and once, at Christmastime, they went to Madrid to see the streets all lit up.

Those were short trips, but Hugo really enjoyed them. He loved the oceanarium in Valencia, the science museum in Granada and the huge squares in Madrid.

You’re going to have a marvelous time! his mother says, closing up the suitcase as best she can.

She’s added so many clothes she can barely zip it up. But that’s not all. Lorena has prepared four more bags.

In one bag she has packed enough food to feed half of Germany: cheese sandwiches, salami sandwiches, spicy pork sausage sandwiches, spam sandwiches, bags of chips, olives, salty snacks, chocolate croissants, chocolate milkshakes and muffins.

Sándwich, Los Alimentos, Salchicha, Merienda, Fresco

You don’t have to throw in so much food, Augustine tells her, his eyes wide. We’ll stop to eat at bars and restaurants. We’ll be fine, honey.

But Lorena doesn’t care. In fact, she’s even made a potato omelet and put it in a plastic container.

In addition to food, in the other bags, Hugo has enough underpants for a whole year, as well as short-sleeved shirts, jeans, shorts and even a swimsuit.

But didn’t you say I’m going to be cold? Hugo asks her. Why are you packing me a swimsuit?

Well, Lorena tells him, you never know. You should always have extras, just in case.

    CHAPTER 2

    Hugo’s father is self-employed.

That means he owns his own company, which is pretty cool because he’s his own boss.

If Hugo were his own boss, he’d tell himself how well he did everything and raise his own salary, which is awesome.

We’ll be leaving very early tomorrow, Augustine tells him, mussing up his hair. "I’ve already
