Chapter 1
Max
I lie down on the chaise lounge after swimming thirty laps and sigh contently. It feels great to be home. I didn’t realize how much I missed my parents’ house. I hated the tiny square I had in the university dorm although I didn’t spend that much time there because most of time I was in the library or the gym besides the classrooms. Now my first year of college was finally over. I have a long, nice summer ahead. I might look for a part-time job in town later, but for now, all I want is to relax.
And I mean it. I put my hands under my head and space out while appreciating my surroundings. Our yard isn’t large, but my parents make sure it’s well-kept and private. They planted lots of trees, making it feel like a small forest. I particularly like the cypresses along the edges of our property. I was still six when they were planted and I remember being the same height as the trees. For about a year we grew at the same pace, but after that, they outgrew me quickly. Now I feel like a dwarf when I stand in front of them.
I gaze at the trees, remembering when I was still a child I could easily spot the two-story Victoria house next door. My classmate Jeff used to
