For Lou Lou,
you are not here to see the manifestation of this dream,
but you were certainly a major contributor.
Rest in Heaven Mama
Laura Lou Francis
1942 - 2017
To my children who give me a reason to get out of bed.
To my GrandShuga, Layla, that fills my heart with love, even as she claims it all.
To my sisters (none of which are biological) for pushing me
when I was too afraid to move forward,
for lifting me when I was down,
for guiding me when I was uncertain, and
for showing me parts of myself that I didn’t see.

Just Let Me Breathe
George Floyd 2020
Why are you so threatened
By the color of my skin
Yes I have more melanin
But we’re both the same within
If you cut me
Will I not bleed
If you threaten me
Will I not plead
The blood of Jesus covers me
Does it not cover you
That question is rhetorical
There’s no answer for what you do
Tell me, what color is your heart
I can only assume that it’s black
Mine is purple and blue
Because of the oxygen that it lacks
I only desire to live my life
The way that God ordained
But somehow you can’t live in peace
Unless l am bound and chained
But lately that isn’t even enough
To set your spirit right
So you dress up as policemen
To justify taking my life
Why are you so threatened
By the color of my skin
Yes I have more melanin
But we’re both the same within
When I run
Do I not sweat
When I bathe
Am I not wet
How can you hate me so much
That you can look into my eyes
And take away my last breath
Based on Karen’s lies
Why do you
