Chapter One
What’s It Like To Have A Pet Kitten?
This ginger kitten is almost six months old.
What is the most popular pet in the world?
The answer is cats.
There are more than 600 million pet cats in the world. That’s about three times as many as the second most popular pet, dogs.
This book tells you all about kittens and cats – what it’s like to have a kitten or cat, where to find your new pet, what he or she needs to be healthy and happy, how to deal with ‘bad’ cat behaviour and ideas for what to name your cat.
What makes cats so popular as pets?
Maybe it’s because they’re so cute. All cats have big eyes. Their eyes are the biggest of any animal, when compared to their face size and body size.
Having big eyes is one of the things that really appeals to humans. We think that creatures with big eyes, short noses and small chins are adorable. The reason for this is that big eyes, short noses and small chins remind us of human babies’ faces.
It isn’t just that we like faces that look like this. Our bodies release a hormone that makes us like them and want to protect them. Hormones are chemicals in our bodies that control growing and can cause us to behave in certain ways.
Because of one hormone, babies and small animals with big eyes have a power over us! They can make us want to protect them and love them.
Some of the special things about having a pet cat are they can be good companions.
They like being with people.
They are easy to care for.
They are soft and furry.
Their purring is very soothing to people. Stress is a known cause of many illnesses, some of them serious. This means cats can help keep their owners healthy!
Most cats aren’t interested in car rides and usually aren’t good travellers. They prefer the comforts of home.
But, like people and all pets, they need proper food, a warm and safe home and, occasionally, good medical care.
Also like people, they sometimes act badly. Or make mistakes. They might scratch your furniture, or throw up on the rug, or meow loudly when you want to go to sleep.
In this book, we will talk about all these ‘bad cat’ things and how to teach
