Meeting Madness - C Docktor
Introduction
During a recent appointment with a client, she started talking about her goals one thing she wanted to work on was spending more time with her employees to gain a first-hand understanding of what they did all day. As she spoke, she mentioned that she was just too busy; she did not have enough hours in the day to get her work done, let alone spend that kind of time with her direct reports. So, I asked her to walk through her calendar of events with me.
One thing stood out to me; meetings took up 90% of her workday. Again, 90% of this young lady's day was spent in meetings, and her goal was to spend more time with her direct reports to gain a clearer understanding of their day. I began thinking about how I could help this client remove meetings from her calendar.
After letting that soak in for a few days, what I realized was that there are quite a few ways to open up your calendar. I decided to start exploring my own meetings. I soon noticed a couple of trends, and as I dug deeper, I realized that there are many things wrong with how we are developing, accepting, and declining meeting invitations that come into our inbox. I wondered; how I could apply value to the time I spend in each meeting event.
COVID-19 has created a new virtual workplace that we, as a society, need to learn to accommodate. Along with that comes meeting fatigue, survey fatigue &, well, just straight fatigue. Not to the fault of anybody in particular, but we have become lazy when creating meetings. Maybe this was indeed an issue before COVID-19 hit, but it has been highlighted as an even bigger issue since. We all need to work our way out of the fatigue stage and start being more directive in doing things, like developing and accepting meetings.
I have written this guide to help people like you get beyond spending 90% of your day in meetings. You are working at a different time, and it is now time to start working differently. This guide will take you on a journey beginning with developing thorough meeting invitations, providing the ultimate value within your meetings, and attending meetings relevant to you, then on to declining meetings that take less priority or offer less value.
