    On a gray and cloudy early morning in the city, there sat a disheveled old man, resting on a piece of tattered cardboard on the cold concrete sidewalk. He was wrapped in a well-worn brown corduroy overcoat. Atop his head was a stretched-out black skullcap which covered half of his eyes. I noticed that he wasn’t your typical homeless man. He didn’t have any possessions with him except for the tattered cardboard he was sitting on.

    Every day people would pass him, unnoticed, on their way to wherever their busy lives took them. I am not sure how long the old man has been in that spot. As I approached the old man one day on my way to work, I have often wondered why no one ever took the time to talk to him. It was then that I realized that it was up to me to reach out to him. Something in me said that I was the one chosen to do so.

    I cautiously went closer to the man. I held out my hand to hopefully shake his.

    Hi, my name is Tayanita, but you can call me Tay for short.

    He slowly turned to me and held out his dry calloused hand. My name is Erwin.

    Nice to meet you, I said.
