ey, congratulations for the success of your mission," Murphy said to Kane.

You did great. I’d say your promotion isn’t so far now. C’mon, your girlfriend will be happier when she hears the news than you look right now, Jasper said while taking a bite from Kane’s burger.

I think I’m going to be my grandfather’s age by the time I get a promotion. But thank you guys, Kane said, snatching his burger from Jasper’s hands.

So, what are you doing tonight? Murphy asked.

I’m meeting Carol and then I’ll just probably spend the night with her.

Kane had just returned from a successful mission and he was sitting in the office cafeteria with his fellow officers when Lincoln approached them and said crossly, Hey. Kane. If you’re done showing off, can you pick up my case files from Harvey’s office?

Kane promptly stood up with his hands behind in an attention position and said, Yes, sir. I’ll go right away.

Officer Kane was like a swimwear model without the charm. Clean-cut and the recipient of a humour bypass. But if you wanted efficiency, he was your man. The military had been his childhood dream, and he lived it like he was an all-action hero. Backing up that muscle was his perfect aim and faultless paperwork. He couldn’t keep a girl, though – it was a popular rumor that he cycled through them faster than his razor blades. The job always came first with him, but he couldn’t stand it the other way around. The first time he had cancelled because they had to work late or see a girlfriend, he pouted and picked up a new girl.

In that way his good looks cursed him, enabling his urge to ditch his women rather than work things out and improve his character. But Carol had been so understanding. She was his oldest friend and knew that he would always put his job first, so she never demanded his time.

Kane, as a general rule, hid his emotions. He never even opened up fully to his girlfriend, Carol, or his parents, or his best friends. He figured they were intel he’d rather not hand over, and so at all times his face never revealed what he was truly feeling deep inside. But today was different. He had successfully finished six consecutive missions and excitement poured out of him like sunshine through fine white linen; he glowed from the inside out. The smile that cracked his face hadn’t been seen since boyhood, and he walked faster, talked faster, ate faster. He just had a good feeling about the day; nothing that felt this right could possibly go wrong. It just couldn’t.

The words Harvey Ross, Senior Officer were carved into the glass door. He knocked lightly, but due to the noises he had to knock a few times again. Kane opened the door himself to see six officers sitting in a corner deeply engaged in conversation. The office was painted grey, and it had only one floor-to-ceiling window, which faced the main road. On the grey desk sat a desktop computer, a notebook lying open, and a stack of papers sitting under a turtle-shaped paperweight. In the corner, the air conditioner was blasting a medium, and there was a swivel chair in the middle of the office. A bookshelf, bursting with books, was in a corner, and yet another stack of papers under a paperweight that was shaped to look like a tuft of grass. A few pens were lying on the papers, but some had fallen onto the top of the bookshelf.

None of the officers cared enough to see who had entered the office – they did not pause their conversation to look up. Kane could listen to what they were taking about so he started reading their lips.

I wonder who they are going to send to rescue the redheaded girl, said one of the officers. I just hope it’s not me. I don’t want to die.

Then Harvey spoke so loudly that Kane did not have to read his lips anymore. The girl is a lost cause, anyone who goes to rescue her is surely going to end up losing his life. I hope the general realizes– He stopped to look at the door.

Harvey’s eyes met Kane’s and he pretended as if he had just entered. Good morning, sir. Lincoln sent me to pick up his case files.

The other officers turned to see who was there. Harvey stood up, his hands crossed on his chest, and walked towards his desk. Harvey had a muscular build, a symmetrical face – well-defined, with a sharp jaw and angular cheekbones. The complexion of his skin went well with his ocean-like eyes. He looked down for a moment, pouring himself a glass of water and bringing the glass to his lips. The burning sensation pouring down his throat, creating a warm feeling deep inside of his stomach. He picked up the first file from under the turtle-shaped paperweight and handed it over to Kane. Kane took the file and went out of the office, closing the door behind him. He took a long sigh that he did not know he had been holding in.

Lincoln was too cold on you before, Kane, Murphy said. I think he’s going to give you extra work.

The three of them were sitting on their desks completing tasks.

I don’t mind working as long as they pay me, Kane said, winking in Murphy’s direction. I just need tomorrow off. It’s my little sister’s birthday.

Well, don’t worry, because you’ll be getting at least a week off before you get any other missions. You deserve some time off, said Jasper with a reassuring smile.

Kane smiled back at him and said, I am the one getting off, now you. Get back to your work, you both.

Kane was cleaning his small desk and packing his stuff when Harvey came to their cabin. He walked towards Kane’s desk swiftly.

You did very well, but you cannot have vacations yet because the higher-ups have allotted you this very important task. I am sorry. Harvey spoke in a monotonous tone with his head down the whole time.

Murphy and Jasper left their computer screens to look at Harvey with their mouths open and their eyes popping out of their sockets. They were shocked, as all of them had thought that Kane would be getting a few days off to rest. Kane could not properly understand what was going on, but he said anyway, "Okay, sir, I
