    Chapter One

Focus, just stay focused and you can get through this Quinn.

Her ice cold hands barely felt the keys in her hands. The tugging at her shoulder was the laptop bag she carried to work every day. Her shoulder ached as the muscles had weakened from not being used. Her feet wobbled a little in the worn heels, the tickling of her hair on her collar became annoying. She wanted to rip the silk lined suit from her body in outrage. It’s wrong…it’s all wrong! Biting her bottom lip, she quelled the rage with a breath at each ding of the elevator. A fear ebbed after each breath. Could she do this? The doors opened three floors before her exit and her stomach dropped. No…no I am not ready yet… The floor was empty, a mistake. I am falling apart, this was a bad idea. Just get to your office and everything will be fine.

Dread wrapped around her throat. She reached forward, pressing the emergency button. The elevator stopped and she leaned against the wall, closing her eyes. This is a mistake. Quinn released the elevator and waited for the doors to open again. Once they did, she moved without thought to the stairs. She reached the concourse of the parking garage and took the final elevator to her car. Dropping into the driver’s seat, her tears blinded any sight. Damn, I can’t keep doing this!

Yanking the center console open, she searched for a tissue. Discarding garbage, paper and mail onto the passenger’s seat, she eventually found the pack of tissues she kept for emergencies. Emma always got runny noses and she never seemed to have a tissue until she found the bulk pack of mini’s at Costco. The memory made a small smile come to her face as her daughter’s beautiful face came into her head. Quinn sat back, taking in a deep breath. It will get easier. Or so they told her. Glancing over at the mess she’d piled in the passenger’s seat, an envelope caught her attention.
