Girlz Run the World in Pearls - Annette Watson-Johnson

    The Pearl

There are so many definitions for the word PEARL or Pearl. When it is written as P.E.A.R.L., it is an acronym. Depending on the company or organization that utilize it in this form, it usually represents a shortened name or mission. I am not a member of any sorority, but I know that most of them wear pearls as they represent or symbolize something of importance. You are not privy to the why unless you pledge and get inducted into the sisterhood. We are excited to now have Mrs. Kamala Harris, a black woman on the ballot for the position of Vice President of the USA and this November she could be the 1st women elected to sit in that position. Since she is a member of a sorority, we will see her wearing pearls on a regular basis. In reference to the contents of this book, we are defining the word Pearl as a jewel that symbolizes our exodus from the disparities that lead to our adversities. Therefore, we women who have overcome adversities are jewels and should wear our pearls to represent them proudly.

I have noticed that there is a correlation between a natural pearl and adversities that affect us women and girls from around the world. We are the victims of so many crimes against humanity. Depending on your race and continent, we are not seen as equal and our rights to fairness comes into question more often than not. We hit more brick walls than men. If you are a black woman you can double the numbers. We strive to do it all against the odds but that sometimes lead to adversities that can hinder us from reaching our destiny in life. We all have a story, but the outcome is determined by what part of the world you live in. We all share a common denominator that consist of wanting what is best for us, our families, the community we live in and the sacrifices we will make to protect it. In most instances, pearls are formed under the same premise. A natural pearl is formed organically when a foreign substance or irritant invades the oyster's soft tissue muscle (the mantle) intentionally or accidentally. The mantle is the oyster’s internal organ. When the oysters eat, the mantle uses the minerals to produce the nacre which creates its shell. The foreign substance or irritant could occur from an attack (irritant) by another grain of sand, ocean creature, a parasite, or an injury.

Once the oyster encounters a foreign substance or irritant, it begins to repair itself in a kind of immune system-like way. It will cover the foreign substance or irritant with layers of nacre. This process usually creates the shell but will form a pearl instead. The natural pearl becomes a beautiful jewel formed in many colors as the result of this biological process. These freshwater pearls can take between 1 and 6 years to form, whereas saltwater pearls may take between 5 and 20 years. The longer a pearl stays in the shell buried in the bottom of the ocean, the more nacre forms and the larger the pearl.

Since the beginning of time, pearls have been known to be the ultimate symbols for wisdom. Valued for their calming effects, pearls represent serenity, while being able to strengthen valuable relationships and convey a sense of safety. Pearls also symbolize purity, as well as integrity and loyalty. Pearls represent wisdom gained through experience. The gems of the ocean are believed to offer protection to the wearer, as well as attract good luck and wealth. Moreover, pearls speak of the wearer’s purity and integrity (thepearlsource.com).

Natural pearls are created in the ocean and quite rare. It can take more than 100,000 deep-ocean-living creatures to make just one strand of pearls, but oysters are the primary source of these natural pearls. They are mentioned in the Bible numerous times and were adorned by great kings & queens, often revered as status indicators. Today, they are rarer and more expensive than ever, often used in a less expensive, costume style fashion.

There are no visible signs that an oyster has a pearl inside. You just have to open it to see. But what we learned from an oyster is that it will sit in the bottom of the ocean and the pearl will continue to form inside of it. Like pearls many of us have had irritants invade our being and are growing these pearls of wisdom but keeping them hidden at the bottom of our ocean. Just like a fisherman will deep dive to discover these priceless jewels? Those irritants could have been rape, abuse, hurt or any other negative tradition that caused is to be held back. The best way to release our pearls is by acknowledging what it is and how it affected you mentally, physically, and spiritually or it will continue to robe you of your vision. One way to release is to testify as our testimonials relates to the blessing that we encounter as well as real life adversities we encounter in our daily lives. The church has been the forefront of using this method because it encourages the congregation to have faith and learn from other’s experiences. A testimony is powerful because it is a story about an exodus from an adversity or death-to-life experiences. Giving or hearing others personal testimony is a way to provide comfort, unmask, shame the devil, share a deliverance, encourage, guide, or spread the gospel with others. This is accomplished by explaining a personal salvation experience. It also gives others an example of how testimonials and God can change live. But many church testimonials leave out many details of who raped, beat, hurt, stole, etc. from us. This could be because many of our adversities have been a generational family tradition in which we have normalized to keep it all in the family to protect the family from shame or the irritant invader from falling into the hands of the bias justice system. With no voice or protection, we then continue to be victimized mentally, physically, and spiritually.

We have all encountered invasions of foreign substances, irritants, or disparities such as lack of similarity or equality, inequality, or difference. These and other issues have caused us countless generational internal and/or external adversities that may be difficult to overcome. These challenges have sickened many of us mentally, physically, and spiritually. As a result, we often keep them buried, allowing them to fester for years or even decades as they form into larger problems.

These problems can manifest themselves into hindrances, burdens, sickness, faithlessness, vision blockers, anger, or negative traditions that are unknowingly passed down from one generation to another. According to dictionary.com, an adversity is an adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress: unfortunate event or circumstance. As a safety precaution, we cover our hardships and setbacks with bandages, masking or suppressing them internally. When we do this, we are like a pearl covering the foreign invader that enters its space with nacre to repair the damage.

When oysters are invaded, they muster up an amazing environment underneath its shell that produces a beautiful pearl. In our daily lives, that foreign substance or irritant represents adversity transforming us into our current selves – positively polishing our flaws into unique strengths. This metaphor has become the foundation for this book.

In this book, we are going to deep dive to the bottom of the ocean for our oysters. We will open the shell to retrieve our pearls. These priceless, hidden gems represent the unmasking of our hidden mental, physical, and spiritual adversities via our personal testimonials to unveil our truths. Some of our unveiling will shock but the unmasking is a part of our exodus from those situations that kept us bound. With this book, you will be able to reset your priorities, allowing you to navigate your mental, physical and spiritual wellness journey. This can help you conquer fears, achieve goals, strive for dreams, and clearly see your vision. You are not alone, and you will realize that there are others with testimonials similar to yours. We pray that each reader gains a better understanding and seek out other avenues to better treat their mental, physical, and spiritual adversities. You will learn how we GIRLZ RUN THE WORLD IN PEARLS, by adorning them as a badge of our deliverance, exodus, strength, beauty, and empowerment.

Understanding Mental, Physical and Spiritual Adversities

In Dr. Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Habit 5 says "Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood." In summary this is when people form opinions based on their own experiences. You should work hard to understand the other person’s perspective because both can see or hear the same thing but form two completely different viewpoints. Before we began to read the Authors testimonials, we ask that you review the list as defined by the Lead Author along with the list of issues that can affect you mentally, physically, and spiritually. If you are afflicted by one area, the others will follow like a domino effect. Maintaining this balance is a must. All three must be in balance, if not, it could block your vision, goals and or dreams from realizing true abundance.

    Mental Adversities

We should strive to be mentally well. I define mental wellness as the psychological well-being and a satisfactory adjustment to society and to the ordinary demands of life. Knowledge is power, so indulging in the cognitive presence of mental health and mental instability can lead to the positive spectrum such as rebuilding relationships within your family, community, and workplace.

Mental Adversities could lead to decisions that affect the following areas in your life:

Dear God to whom my blessings abundantly flow, give me strength, wisdom and guidance today, to absorb these testimonials in every conceivable way. Lord, help me to understand that in order for me to mentally, physically and spiritually heal from any negative traditions that I may have inherited, I must began by getting to the root of the negative traditions that caused my bitterness, anger, deception, prejudice, family secrets, hurt, self-hate, brokenness, abuse, illnesses, jealousy, and hateful attributes that these adversities have established in my life. Help me to relate to these Authors testimonials so that my self-reflection will allow me to integrate forgiveness, transgressions, deliverance, confessions, support, knowledge sharing, acceptance, love, conversations, humbleness, self-respect, worthiness, and validation so that I too can heal. Bless these Authors who opened up to share their testimonials. In your name, amen.

    God Said, Just Get Well

    By Annette Watson-Johnson M.A, B.S

1 Corinthians 10:31: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

My oyster was invaded by the irritant or foreign substance of ignoring predisposed health conditions. In my testimonial I am removing my pearl from this oyster to unveil the mask of this negative tradition. It is said that women are the nurturers of the earth that provides healing, so what are you eating and feeding your families? My father said to my eight older siblings that we are no longer slaves and we will not eat like them. He told them that black people no longer have to eat the slave owner’s garbage or fatty cuts of their leftover meats. He also said that we can shop to buy other options and make healthier food choices. I was a young child and do not recall if I was in the vicinity to hear him say this. I am the ninth child out of eleven, so I was probably too young to even understand what it all meant. Not even sure what started the conversation, but I can now fully comprehend why he relayed this message to us.

We are mentally, physically, and spiritually deficient. I have heard the phrase You are what you eat but usually what accompanies this statement is an unpleasant picture of a person over- indulging in an unhealthy snack or the famous, oversized fried chicken leg dressed as an obese women with an enlarged stomach. Who can forget about the new deep-fried chicken sandwich craze from a well-known franchise that caused such a demand that they sold out across the country? I have nothing against a chicken sandwich but when you are fighting with
