      What do you have to say for yourself, Adralis?

      The cold copper stings the skin around my wrists and ankles. Lifting my chin, I look up at the Iron Bench. Three justices stare at me, their silky white hair running past their shoulders. Their eyes are all an icy blue, and their nearly translucent, crystal-white skin glimmers in the dim candlelight of the courtroom. They’ve set me on a wooden pedestal, making it impossible to touch the rocky walls surrounding us.

      Are you willing to listen to my tale? I say. I stand by my actions. I have only ever served our people.

      The three judges glance back and forth, imperceptible messages passing between their eyes. After a pause that feels like an eternity, the left-most one says, We grant you the opportunity to testify on your behalf. You may present your case.

      I swallow. The lump in my throat feels like a rock. Thank you, your honors. I will not disappoint you.

      Of course you won’t, says
