Dr. DeGoede is a licensed clinical psychologist who developed Belief therapy, a concept that goes beyond cognitive therapy. During his fifty years of providing mental health services to a diverse population, he wanted to provide a therapeutic methodology that could be adapted to every aspect of someone's life. "Dr. DeGoede and Danae are the reason my son is still alive. This is no book-blurb hyperbole. We came to them as do many parents, with our very broken, multiple-drug dependent child. They showed us, first-hand, the life-saving potential of Belief
Therapy. This book, like their program is a miracle. It elucidates in clear, simple concepts the profound truths that led my son to a life of clarity. Their program is the only one that works. The only one."

"Dr. DeGoede’s book Belief Therapy brings to mind the old adage you are what you think. This is a significant factor with addictions and codependency. This book offers techniques and insights to change our beliefs about ourselves which is an
essential element associated with 12 Step Programs."
Jan Fagerquist, MS, C.A.S
Chemical Dependency Program Coordinator
"Never have I read anything on the subject of therapy so clearly and simply and effectively written. For the first time, I understood the definition of codependency and thus my relationship with my son. Simple or not, it evoked in me terrible dreams for three nights. I carefully wrote them down and analyzed them (as I know what treasures these dragons protect) and so gained a thorough understanding of how incest had set me up for being codependent. Through Belief Therapy, I have become free of half a century of anguish and self-blame."

PREFACE
For approximately the last 50 years of my life I have been involved in the business
of psychology. I have throughout this time been student, teacher, and helper.
In these roles, I have devoted much of my life to understanding and utilizing various methods and philosophies of psychology to help people learn to change their lives in useful and positive ways. Through these years of study and practice, I have begun to recognize certain common principles of life that must be understood and utilized to take control of our lives and improve our day to day reality.
My task has been to organize these underlying truths in a way that allows them to be understood and utilized to improve everyday life. If I have been able to accomplish this task in any measurable way, then I have succeeded and owe a great debt to the many and diverse students of human nature who have preceded me.
INTRODUCTION
What is Belief Therapy?
Belief therapy is based on the idea that our beliefs create our reality. This means that deeply held ideas and beliefs about life, that are often unconscious and unexamined, affect our daily emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. These ideas, if used, allow us to once again feel in control of our lives. If my beliefs are creating my everyday reality, and I am able to discover, examine, and change these beliefs, then I am in charge of my life to a much greater degree than previously thought.
Where Do These Beliefs Come From?
It is common knowledge that our early childhood experiences have a powerful effect on our lives. What is not so easy to understand is why this is so. The reason we are so influenced by our early experiences is because that is where our first beliefs developed. It is just these beliefs that are likely to be unconscious, unexamined, and irrational. As children, we accept these beliefs as truths and then feel and act accordingly. If our childhood beliefs or ideas are not examined, they become a basis
