Author

Jytte F Lokvig

Jytte Fogh Ph.D. is a nationally recognized Alzheimer's and dementia specialist who has been an active proponent of progressive and person-centered eldercare since the late 1990s. The author of several popular books and guides on using the arts and person-centered approaches for effective eldercare, she's frequently invited to speak at conferences and other national events. Growing up in Denmark, Jytte was surrounded by creators and innovators who encouraged and supported her community activism. She started at an early age developing programs for her schoolmates, a weekly movie club, an open art studio, and a nature explorers' group. Later, she organized local families to open their homes on weekends and holidays to international students who were stranded at their boarding school. After coming to the United States as a young adult, she settled in Southern California, attended Art Center of Design and later earned her degrees from Antioch/ West, UCLA, CSULA, and CSU. Following in her artist father's footsteps, she was an exhibiting artist and later expanded into fashion design, community celebrations, arts advocacy, and art education. After the Watts uprising in the mid-sixties, she and her husband worked with neighborhood youths to create the Watts Happening Coffeehouse, which has continued to be a hub for creative programs in the neighborhood. She was a founding staff member of the first publicly funded experimental school in Los Angeles. Dr. Lokvig is a proponent of the Montessori philosophy, as an educator as well as a dementia and Alzheimer's specialist. The Montessori philosophy is based on supporting individuals in pursuing their own interests to the best of their ability. She holds several national and international certifications.
