    Introduction

    by Sharon Marshall Lockett

We were decorating our home with memorabilia to celebrate Milt’s 90th Birthday when we ran across a national treasure: his Navy cartoons from World War II. I knew he was a gifted architect. I didn’t know he had ever drawn cartoons. I was mesmerized. I still am.

This began our trek to share his gift with you. The originals were yellowed with age, fragile, and disorganized. We organized them and copied them in black and white. What you see has not been touched up; it reflects his original work at age 18...even more poignant because he drew them on an old mimeograph sheet, which meant he could not make corrections.

Once copied, we began the process of jarring his memory of events 75 years ago. Each Section Introduction contains his memories of the related events. The process of writing his Artist’s Reflection, placed on the page to the left of each cartoon, was captivating. The detail and symbolism in his work astonish me. I am more in awe of his talent every time I see it.

Along with the reflections, we share some articles from the ship’s newspaper. These are labeled FUBAR (the paper’s name: Fidelity, Unity, Bravery, Allegiance, Readiness). They are obviously from an old non-electric typewriter. Some that are poignant but difficult to read have been retyped but not edited...and still bear the label FUBAR.

You will often see the title: Did You Know.... This section brings historical facts to light that are pertinent to the cartoon or time period. Many items came from Internet research. If one source said it so uniquely I was intrigued, the source is noted. If the information was readily available from
