Chapter 1 – Why Some People Draw Better

Do you like to draw? Does it feel like drawing is not your forte? Are you convinced that you cannot draw anything other than stick figures?

There are some people who seem to draw perfectly and effortlessly whereas most people struggle. And so we come to believe that some are born with this talent and others simply aren't, including ourselves.

According to research, the ability of a person to draw realistically depends on three factors. One, people who draw well have a better perception of reality. Two, they have excellent memory for visual information. Three, they choose their subjects well. Let us look at these points one by one.

Do you see the world as it really is?

If you are not drawing well today, it could be that you have a poor perception of reality. The thing is certain characteristics like shape, size, and color are often misjudged by our visual systems. This is where most of the drawing errors come from.

We know that objects at a distance are bigger than they appear. This knowledge has a tendency to interfere with our visual system, sending false information to our brain which leads to a misinterpretation of what our eyes are seeing. This misperception tends to interfere with our drawings and it happens to most of us. The few who manage to overcome the visual misperception and read what their eyes are actually seeing tend to be excellent at drawing.

Do you have a good visual memory?

Researchers say visual memory also has a huge role
