Chapter 1 - What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a medical condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, with fatigue, memory, mood, and sleep issues. The term fibromyalgia is derived from the Latin word fibro (fibrous tissues) and the Greek words myo (muscle) and algia (pain).
In layman’s terms, it means widespread pain in your muscles. This disorder causes many other symptoms, and laboratory tests do not usually validate the condition. In fact, results often make the patients feel like they are hypochondriac.
Doctors usually diagnose fibromyalgia by pressing on the identified tender points, but still this method does not give a clear explanation as to where the symptoms are coming from. However, researchers are convinced that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations that in turn affect the way our brain processes the pain signals.
Patients suffering from fibromyalgia would describe their symptoms as similar to a flu-like infection. They often complain about extreme exhaustion. They have trouble sleeping and when they do get some sleep, they often wake up to an aching body. The symptoms often start after undergoing surgery, after a physical trauma, psychological stress, or
