Dedicated to the memory of my mother. Ferol Emma Ownby Lavergne was a strong woman who chose to raise her children among the murky bayous and Cajun culture of Louisiana.

    Unwelcome Visitor

    Wednesday, July 12, 1944

    Dear Papa,

Mama says since you are somewhere in Europe, fighting in this dumb ol’ war, I should only write letters to you about happy thoughts to cheer you up.

    But I can’t Papa.

All around town people are always saying, V for Victory or Do your part to help the soldiers do theirs. So, we did our part and took in a boarder named Lucy who came all the way from London, England.

I want do to my part for the war effort, but does that mean I have to share my room with a stranger who talks funny?

Why, she doesn’t even know the legend of the gris-gris! I thought everybody knew about that swamp creature. When I told her about how it likes to come out of the bayou at night to steal the farmers’ chickens around here, she just told me I was childish to still believe in such fairy tales when there’s a war going on.

Mama says we should feel sorry for Lucy because her family lost their home during something called the Blitz, but I don’t know , Papa. It’s hard to be her friend when she’s so different. And what if she spoils my birthday next week?

Oh, why did that mean ol’ Hitler have to start this fight, anyway?

    Love you bunches,

    Emma

Emma carefully folded her letter and tucked it into an envelope. She’d make time later to take it to the post office, but right now all she wanted was to sneak into her room without Lucy finding out.

Today the Bijou was showing a double feature, Dracula and Frankenstein. Emma had been saving coins for weeks. All she wanted was one afternoon without Mama reminding her it was her duty to help Lucy have a good time.

Tiptoeing down the hall to her bedroom, Emma almost made it inside before her mother called out from another part of the house.

Emma? Where are you, girl? Please come into the kitchen.

Heaving a long sigh, Emma made her way back downstairs. Stepping into the warm kitchen, she barely glanced at the petite girl sitting on a high stool and lining
