In Granny’s Care

The earliest thing that I can remember is being cared for by my great-grandmother Albina. I stayed with her every day while my mother worked. This went on in the 1960s from my birth to the time I began kindergarten in Waterbury, Conn.
I had no toys at Granny’s house. If Granny was hanging out laundry, then I played with clothespins. If Granny was crocheting, then I twisted up my own ball of yarn into knots. But I had the most fun when Granny worked in the garden. There I had my own little shovel and my own little hole to dig in.
Granny was an Italian immigrant and (a slap). I got that threat almost every day, but I don’t recall ever actually receiving that pac-a-pac.
