In memory of Stubby the squirrel,
who was the inspiration for this story to be written.
Prologue
Stephan Rovernut, a gray squirrel, moved briskly clutching a leather briefcase. Soon he would cross the Little Stoney Creek by meticulously hopping over a small network of stones and small rocks. It would bring him safely on the other side of the wooded road which led to the business district of the squirrel community.
It was a daily ritual for Stephan Rovernut, for he was the mayor of the community. But today, an extraordinary event was to unfold. So extraordinary in fact, the outcome and news of the event would travel like wildfire throughout the community. And the event would forever be known as the Incredible Injustice.
Chapter 1
It was a morning like so many others that had transpired in the squirrel community, sunny, peaceful and with the customary morning activity.
Stephan Rovernut just finished crossing the Little Stoney Creek. Unbeknownst to him, a large hawk positioned high in a tree top was focusing on his every movement.
Suddenly, without warning the hawk swooped down casting his large shadow on the ground below. Sensing eminent danger and on the verge of panic, Stephan Rovernut—the mayor of the community—scurried for the first tree he could reach hoping it could provide him with even the slightest bit of sanctuary.
But the hawk wasn’t intending to be denied his breakfast. He flew in for the kill, and luckily for Stephan missed his body. Instead, the hawk latched onto his tail. The hawk was flapping his wings hard and trying desperately to pull his prey free from the tree. But Stephan held on tightly knowing that if he let go it surely would result in his demise.
Then an incredible incident occurred. Stephan’s tail was severed from his body leaving him with a tiny stump. Partially satisfied, the hawk left with Stephan’s bushy tail locked in his talons.
Stephan felt pain, relief and anger all at the same time. Then, a moment later what just transpired dawned on him. He was alive, and very grateful for it, but his tail had been abducted by a hungry hawk. What was he to do? His appearance was now permanently altered, and for the worse. He was the mayor of the community. How could he now function in the public eye without a tail? Horrors, horrors,
he cried.
Then, to make matters worse, there was Sly Slick—a half breed of squirrel and rat—the most disliked squirrel of the community. He was a relentless opportunist who could sweet talk mostly anyone. His shady character was complimented by his long, black whiskers more common to a rat. It was said Sly Slick would sell his grandmother’s soul for a bag of peanuts. And Stephan knew his rival would make the most out of him being tailless. He would surely take the incident and try to turn it into a public spectacle.
Stephan realized he must calm down and think. Physically his body would heal quickly, but his appearance wouldn’t. And he surely wouldn’t grow a new tail. No, unfortunately it was one tail per lifetime; horrors, horrors he lamented.
Stephan placed himself on a large branch in a tree by the Little Stoney Creek. The sound of the water was relaxing and soothing and would help his thought process. Yes, he must think smartly and thoroughly, and come up with a plan to counter the revolting development that
