      I've heard people say the town of Flying Fish is doomed because the settlers drove a local tribe away and the shaman pronounced a curse on anyone who settled here. It's not true, of course; no Native American was ever stupid enough to live on this narrow jut of rocky land. The barely three block wide strip sticks out into the sea where we're pounded by the waves and wet even on the best of days.

      We weren't cursed by the ghosts of a local tribe; it was Mrs. Audelberry who did it. We all knew she was a hedge witch and were generally careful to stay on her good side. We didn't count on the politicians, though. The trouble started a
