Chapter One: Of Ponies and Wolves

Another day, another ruin to rummage through. At least that was Runefire’s tired but true saying after this past year of galloping freely on the edges of the Ever Range territory. As a unicorn of some ill repute she realized staying on the fringes was the best chance for continued survival. That and it gave her plenty of free time to search through the wonderful amounts of ruins with her little brother Ember.

For her part she was busy poking her head into what must have been some kind of ancient storage room. Along the walls stood desks that were neck level in height with gray square shaped cubes. The cubes were smoothed around their edges to give them a friendly appearance and had black glass screens over them. Metal rectangles stood underneath them with various wires connecting them up to the plastic cubes. She recognized these as devices the ancients would have used to store data, documents, reports, and all manner of information. Sadly after the first of the apocalypse bombs had dropped few of these survived the aftermath. Even if she had found some way to power these up they would all be dead unless they had been shield from those initial bombs. Which she checked, none were.

Pulling her head out of that room she let out a sigh. So much useful knowledge long gone.

A crash sounded from behind her and she turned her head sharply looking across the grass and dirt covered hall they were in. A gray colt stood in front of an open door with a mess of brooms, mops, and other useless garbage around him. The bucket covering his head was an improvement. He pushed up at the new helmet and quickly stood up on all four legs. With a high pitched squeal he ran forward.

Runefire stepped out of the way and closed the door so he couldn’t get into the old storage room. He went head first into the door, bounced off and landed in a pile on the floor. Ooooo, that hurt.

She chuckled. So, Ember, you ever think to not? Just once?

He groaned. Not what? Not get a bucket stuck on my head for the fifth time?

Sixth, and yes. With a flicker of magic a red aura surrounded the helmet on his head and with her telekinetic spell she yanked the helmet off him. His orange hair was a mess and fell around his face as he sat there blinking.

She shook her head. Come now, we are on an adventure and I think we are close to finding out goal.

He stood up and with an impressive jump he leapt onto her back. Runefire adjusted her red robes and made her way further through the old ruin. The ancients had kept a lot of old stuff here, but from what she saw most of these rooms had once been classrooms. The ancients had been giants, ranging from five feet to six feet tall on average and so had large doors, chairs, desks and pretty much everything. Considering how small these desks were this must have been for their children but adult ponies such as herself could easily fit in them.

Opening one door at the end of a darkened corridor revealed a room drowned in darkness. A flicker of orange light from Ember’s horn and a ball of orange light appeared above them casting the room into a much friendlier shade. There were a few windows covered now by rocks, earth, and roots. This building was mostly covered by a hill now. A thousand years had not done any favors for the place.

On a nearby desk she spotted her target. It was a long stretched out piece of paper revealing a map of a city that hadn’t existed for so long that it’s geological features were completely wrong. Where there was once a coastline and an ocean there was now a mountain. Where cities filled with people had once stood now forests, fields, and swamps. Still looking at it revealed several targets that could be incredibly useful for her journey here on the fringe, one particular castle stood out to her the most.

Opening a saddlebag she withdrew a small card with a picture of a portrait on it. Ember poked at the back of her head. Isn’t that the last one you have? You sure you want to use it on this useless map?

Ember, no piece of ancient knowledge is useless. Furthermore from just looking at this I can see several places of interest, places that may have just survived the great rebirth.

She faced the card toward the map and said, Frame Capture!

The map began to glow for a moment and then there was the sound of a high pitched note playing. She looked at the card and saw a perfect replica of the map and the desk. She had very much succeeded here. Now looking at the map with her eyes she realized that if she just traveled northwest she would encounter some ruins that should have survived. What seemed to be a library but she wasn’t sure based on the strange dialect the ancients had used here.

Off in the distance of the room she saw something she hadn’t noticed before. A
