Chapter 1: Defining Astral Projection

You may already be familiar with the terms astral projection, astral travel, and out-of-body experience. In this chapter, we will further explore what these terms mean, while in the succeeding chapters, we will further discuss how astral projection happens, when it can happen, who can experience it, and everything else related to it.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines astral projection as ‘the ability of a person’s spirit to travel to distant places.’ On Wikipedia, it is defined as ‘a term used in esotericism to describe a willful out-of-body experience, or OBE.’ However, an out-of-body experience can either be voluntary or involuntary, and this is further tackled in the succeeding chapters.

The term astral projection is tantamount to astral travel. When an out-of-body experience is spiritually interpreted, it is known as astral projection. This transpires when a person’s consciousness separates from his/her physical body, but they are nonetheless invisibly linked by this thing called a silver cord. This person’s consciousness is also referred to as the subtle body, or the astral body.

There are several terms that are synonymous to astral body. These terms include Hindu body of bliss, Tantric subtle body, Egyptian ka, Taoist diamond body, Buddhist light body, energy body, or dream body. Some experts say that in Christianity, astral projection is termed as the experience of different heavens, as indicated in the book of Corinthians.

While astral travel often occurs during sleep, it can also occur while a person is awake, day dreaming, or meditating at any time of the day.
