About the Author
CHAPTER ONE
The sales manager Lachlan stood at his personal PA device and spoke to his team. They were all gathered around, facing his office door and awaiting some potentially good news.
‘Thank you all for your hard work this month. There has been renewed interest in television advertising thanks to the increase in rolling coverage and some of you were able to capitalise,’ he said. It was true. The entire world had been glued to their screens in anticipation. From out of nowhere glowing green portals had invaded the entire planet. Nobody could explain them, and some people had become so curious that they dove into the unknown in search of answers.
‘This brings me to the Employee of the Month,’ continued Lachlan. ‘This person has shown a high level of professionalism. This person is one of the best in the sales team. Please join me in congratulating Maree on her first Employee of the Month award!’
There was a light smattering of applause as Maree stumbled over towards Lachlan. She looked like she’d been awake all night, with dishevelled brown hair and a shirt in desperate need of an iron. Maree snatched the award from her manager’s hand and shuffled away without uttering a word of thanks.

Maree watched as two birds hopped dangerously close to the nearby portal. If one of the birds accidently went in, she wondered whether the other would instinctively follow. She hadn’t followed her husband Leon when he’d jumped and for the past week she couldn’t stop asking herself why. Maree was sitting underneath a tree, covered in crumbs from her lunch, when Marcus wandered towards her. She knew she didn’t look good, but she didn’t care anymore. Leon was gone. He’d left her alone, preferring to throw himself into a portal than stay and be married to her. She took a quick swig from her water bottle as Marcus approached. The bottle was full of rum.
‘Hey Maree. Congrats on winning Employee of the Month,’ said Marcus cautiously.
‘Thanks. It’s all Candice’s fault. She bought a bunch of sales for me before she left so that I’d win,’ replied Maree. She missed Candice a lot, but she wasn’t mad at her for leaving. At least she’d had the courtesy to say a proper goodbye. The birds that Maree had been watching suddenly flew away.
‘Are you doing okay?’ asked Marcus.
‘You don’t really have to check up on me. I know Candice told you to look after me but I’m fine,’ said Maree.
‘I’m not checking up on you because of that. I care about you.’
For Maree it felt like the end of the world. She was running out of people to talk to so Maree decided to confide in Marcus.
‘Leon left me.’
‘Oh my God, that sucks.’
‘I got home after Candice’s party and we had a fight.’
‘Do you want to talk about it?’ asked Marcus.
‘Yes, obviously!’ she shrieked. ‘I’m talking about it now!’
‘Sorry, sorry. Go on. You had a fight?’ asked Marcus.
‘A big one. He walked out the front door and threw himself into the portal on our street.’
‘Whoa.’
‘Can you believe that?’ asked Maree, brushing some of the crumbs off her arm.
‘No. I mean… I didn’t know him but I’m shocked,’ replied Marcus.
‘It’s over,’ stated Maree dramatically. ‘He’s probably dating someone new over there in some other dimension and I’m stuck here.’
‘I’m sorry. That really… sucks,’ repeated Marcus. ‘But maybe this is going to turn into the best thing that could have happened.’
‘I don’t know about that.’
‘Well I do.’
‘He’s such an arsehole.’
‘I know he is. He’s a stupendous arsehole. Hey… maybe
