Broken Beauty Inside the Stained Glass Window - Sheila McKinley

CHAPTER ONE: HAD I NOT BEEN BROKEN

I’m so humbled and honored you have decided to go on this journey with me. You know when you take a trip you have to pack some valuables to take along with you. I need you to get your bible; you will need it for bath time because you are cleansed through the word which is spoken unto you (St. John 15:3). Get some anointing oil because this will be sacred unto you (Exodus 30:25). Get some tissue because God is going to heal you in your weeping (Psalm 30:2). Don’t over pack on this journey because you will be stripping off unnecessary weight (sin) that’s been slowing you down (Hebrews 12:1).

Ok, I think we are ready to go over a few rules God gave me that I must obey as we travel. I hear the the Lord instructing me to be transparent!!!! One thing about being transparent is you have to tell the truth, holding nothing back. It means putting yourself out there like never before.

Nobody wants to be broken, but in this chapter, I'm going to reveal to you what comes out of brokenness and show you that you were broken for a purpose. At the end of this book, God is going to reveal to you what that purpose is.

Definition of Broken: having been fractured or damaged no longer whole or in one piece shattered smashed no longer in working order.

Wow, this was me at one point in my life, and this may be you right now. But, I promise you God is saying no more!!! God is healing you right now!

I don't believe there is one person who will read this book that the word Broken has not fit their life in one way or another.

If you don't know what true brokenness is, let's begin with Jesus!

Mark 14:65 (Amplified Bible – AMP)

65 And some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him, Prophesy [by telling us who hit you]! Then the officers took custody of Him and struck him in the face.

John 19:3 (Amplified Bible – AMP)

3 and they kept coming up to Him, saying [mockingly], "Hail, King of the Jews [Good health!

Peace! Long life to you, King of the Jews]!" And they slapped Him in the face.

Matthew 26:67 (Amplified Bible – AMP)

67 Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and some slapped Him,

John 18:23 (Amplified Bible – AMP)

23 Jesus replied, If I have said anything wrong, make a formal statement about the wrong; but if [I spoke] properly, why did you strike Me?

1 Corinthians 11:24 (King James Version – KJV)

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

No matter how you or I have been broken in our life, it will never come close to what Jesus Christ went through for us, which resulted in his death, but also his resurrection!

Because of his brokenness, we are able to get through our brokenness.

Let me give you a little background of who I am. I was a ward of the state of Wisconsin until I was nine years old. I never had much of a vocabulary, which was my choice. I will explain later in the chapter what I mean when I say, it was my choice. I lived in the children's home until I was six years old and then I was placed in a foster home. I will not mention the couple’s last name even though they are deceased today. My experience with them was horrific. The lady of the house, Ms. Elizabeth, was very mean, and because I refused to speak and refused to call her mother, she treated me inhumane. They lived in a very beautiful ranch style home and in this home was a beautiful bedroom filled with all kinds of dolls and toys. In the closet where beautiful ruffled dresses. However, I was never allowed to enter this room, wear any of the clothes, or play with any of the toys until the social worker from the state came to make her visits. Then Ms. Elizabeth would comb my hair, put me in a beautiful dress, and let me sit in the room to play with one of the beautiful porcelain dolls. As soon as the worker left, she would snatch the doll from me and literally tear the dress off of me. One day for dinner, she made some okra. I didn't like the way it looked, I didn't like the way it smelled nor did I like the taste of it. To this day I do not eat okra. Because I refused to eat it, she told me I was ungrateful. She told me, I have opened up my home to you, which you do not deserve, and you have the nerve not to eat what has been placed before you. She said, Until you eat what is on this plate, you won't get nothing else. For two months, which seemed like two years, she brought out that same plate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The only time I ate was when I went to school. Because I was the only African-American child in the school, when I went to school, I was bullied and teased every single day. There was one Caucasian boy that used to just beat on me every single day. He would push me down, pull my hair, spit on me, and called me dumb nigger!" I thought this was my name because I had never been taught racism. So yessssss, racism is taught!!

One day I came home with my tights torn from being pushed down. I went in the house crying, but Ms. Elizabeth never asked me what happen, never tried to console me; she didn't care. She told me from that day on I would only be wearing black and blue colored clothing. She said I didn't appreciate anything she had done for me. She kept me in a cage in the basement (yes, a dog kennel cage), naked. She used to beat me with belts and switches for no reason. Remember what Jesus said in St. John 18:23? Jesus replied,

If I have said anything wrong, make a formal statement about the wrong; but if [I spoke] properly, why did you strike me?

By no means am I saying that what I went through could ever be compared to what Jesus Christ went through for you and me, but when you are being abused for no reason you ask Why? And let me make it clear, there is absolutely no reason ever to justify abuse! I don't care what you have done; no one ever has the right to put their hands on you! EVER! Get this is your spirit!

I remember her husband, George, he would always look at me with a sense of sadness in his eyes as if to say I want to help you, but I can’t. Who knew this was the beginning of many more beatings to come in my life? On my
