Introduction
I would like to first start off by saying how absolutely grateful I am that you are taking time to read this book! If you are like most people, you have a very busy life and it is hard to find time to read. There are so many books to choose from, and you chose this one. THANK YOU!
This book is full of financial advice that I learned the hard way. Although I’m a Financial Coach now, I haven’t always been financially savvy. My journey to this point was a long, bumpy, and winding road. Many of my clients are surprised to hear my financial journey.
I started working full-time the summer after my eighth-grade year. I loved working. I took great pride in being able to purchase clothes and food for myself (my parents liked this too). I worked all the way through high school and all except my last year of college. Although I was working and making good money for my age, I was also spending more money than I was making. I started my college years with credit card and student loan debt. My last couple years of college included purchasing a house, getting married, and having my first child. All of this while my husband and I were broke! A year after graduating college, I had my second child and racked up more debt.
We made the bad decision to take out a second mortgage on our home to pay off credit card debt, just to turn around and get a large car loan and go back into tens of thousands of dollars more credit card debt. This situation took a toll on our finances and our marriage. In August of 2011, my husband and I separated and I moved out. I moved back home several months later, but only after we agreed to make drastic changes to our finances. When I moved back home, we combined our bank accounts and on January 1, 2012, we started working on our financial plan. Our financial plan consisted of sitting down and talking about why we want to get out of debt, and what we would like to do if we were debt-free. We talked about when we would like to get a new house, and what we would like to do in retirement. Then, we decided to stop using credit cards and begin using cash to pay for purchases. We also started working together on a monthly budget.
We have come a long way since then. If you would’ve told me six years ago that we would be where we are at now, I wouldn’t have believed you. It is amazing how much our lives has changed for the better and all because we took control of our money.
I have a career history in finance/accounting but never planned on writing a financial book. Looking back though, it makes sense for me to write this. In 2006, I graduated college with a major in Psychology and a minor in Spanish. I got a job with a local hospital system as a Financial Counselor. I was in that position for five years. It opened my eyes to how poorly so many people handle their money. During my time at the hospital, I obtained my MBA and then took a position as a Credit Manager for an HVAC distributor. I went from helping individuals with their accounts to helping businesses. I assumed that all business owners knew how to handle money, but I was wrong. I was a Credit Manager for two years and then decided to work from home to help grow my husband’s family pest control business, and also to start my own Financial Coaching business.
In December 2013, I began to pursue my own Financial Coaching business. Since then, I have taught a variety of financial classes, coached individuals and couples and also started a video series called Jenny’s Pennies. This video series contains videos that are approximately five minutes in length and break down financial topics into simple, easy to understand concepts. In my years of working with individuals
