    About the Author

Johnny stopped abruptly and leaned against a tree. He held his stomach, where he felt a sharp pinch from pedaling his bike so hard. He looked up at the clusters of trees, noticing the deep blue of the sky fading to night. A pink haze striped the sky as the last bits of sunlight retreated.

Snap! Johnny heard the sound of wood sticks crunching close by. He held his breath, thinking about how this was the last place he wanted to be before a slimy, gooey, maggot-eating zombie would slice the top of his head and start chomping away at his brains. He looked around with his back against the tree trunk, hoping whatever he heard would trip over and fall on something sharp before having his brains for lunch.

    Scratch, scratch, scratch.

Oh, no. How many times do I have to hear the scratch-scratch-scratch sound? Although the sound never really made an actual scratch sound like the time Ms. Inca slid her fingernails down the chalkboard during English class. Yikes! he thought.

Johnny had been waiting for this moment. Not the moment where he lost his brains to a monster zombie, but the moment where he battled another creature one-on-one. After all, he was the king of slaying zombies back-to-back. He could hear the chanting now from all his friends at school: Johnny, Johnny, Johnny! What a feeling. It was part of the job description. If you were going to be the president of a monster-zombie, witch-hunting club, you should expect at some point to find what you were hunting for.

Johnny didn’t freak out too much about the thought of monster zombies coming for him, as he had plenty of practice defeating them. It was the witch part that concerned him—particularly the skinny, thirteen-year-old, bony witch girl named Hailey who could pop up any moment. Actually, come to think of it, they both were equally scary. Maybe a game of paper-rock-scissors would settle it.

Another minute of agonizing silence passed until he heard something else. This time the sound grew louder and harder as it rustled quickly toward Johnny. It was now or never to finish these monster zombies once and for all! Johnny snapped his head around the tree trunk to take a peek. He hoped it was just a rabbit or squirrel making the rustling noise, but that seemed like wishful thinking—just like pizza topped with ice cream or a school where every class was a different video game.

From the ground below a bony hand grabbed Johnny’s ankle. Johnny shrieked loudly.

Haha! Got ya! Chill out, dude. It’s just me, Alex said, popping out from the bushes and straightening his glasses, which Johnny had almost knocked off from throwing his hands in the air.

You gave me a heart attack, Johnny said.

Wait, do heart attacks make boys scream like girls? Alex asked curiously.

My uncle had a heart attack once, and he was pretty quiet, Connor added, also straightening up from the bushes after burying his flavorless Dubble Bubble chewing gum.

Johnny gasped. You almost gave me a second heart attack, Condog. Almost didn’t see you there.

    Really?

No, man. I mean, who could miss you?

Funny, Connor replied, pinching his nose and making a weird finger gesture like he was pointing at something, although he was just pointing up.

These are edgy times we live in, guys, Alex added. I just saw the biggest mosquito of my life. Or at least the second biggest!

I thought you were Hailey creeping up on me, Johnny replied.

"Seems like Johnny’s in l-o-v-e, Connor sang, laughing. That’s why he’s here all alone waiting for his witch-heart. Get it?"

"Yeah, it’s love, all right. I’d love to stick that witch back on her broom to never-ever-land, Johnny replied. Besides, you guys know I’m a legend around here anyway. Monsters, witches, whatever it takes—I’m in it to win it, baby. They’re all scared of me and
