    Central Park.  Springtime.  Another brutal Big Apple winter finally peters out.

    A time for renewal.  Cleaning out the attic.  And maybe a time for reunions, too.

    The park was experiencing a Hacklyn invasion.

    There was me, twenty-five, glad to be alive and not a worry in the world.

    Savor every moment of joy, Dear Reader, because misery and despair are always in the wings, awaiting their cues.

    We occupied three picnic tables near the playground.

    There was a set of swings, four see-saws and monkey bars.

    My sister, Ann, two years older than me, in attendance, was a corporate lawyer.

    When we were kids, we weren’t allowed near them.

    Mom cheerfully informed us that, Hospitals are filled with dead children and playgrounds are why.  No.

    We weren’t allowed to go trick-or-treating, either.

    People put razor blades in apples and candy bars.

    Apparently, all our neighbors were Satanists.

    When, at ten, I asked her, How come all the other kids get to go?

    Their parents don’t care.

    I guess we won the parent lottery.

    Our parents were the only ones who cared about us.

    Our father, Lee Senior, no longer among the land of the living, was a carpenter and the only thing that made him happy was carpentry.

    If he wasn’t hammering a nail or sanding a block of wood, he could be set off by just about anything and my face was his target on instant gratification.
