Shirley Smith

Shirley Smith first shared God's Word when she was seven years old. Lining up her dolls across her bed, she taught Sunday school lessons from her Bible story books. She memorized short Bible verses in Sunday school and longer passages, such as the parable of the ten virgins from the twenty-fifth chapter of Matthew, in her public school third grade class. After graduating from high school, she prayed for guidance in choosing a vocation. Receiving a degree in Community Health, she instructed public health clinic patients about preventive health measures before taking a job that included instructing new employees. God was steering her toward service in teaching. She became an assistant Sunday School teacher. When God led her to retire, he led to encourage others by writing about lessons he had taught her that had strengthened her faith and her Christian walk. She lives in Jacksonville, Florida.

Preface

God drew me to himself as he drew me to his Word. Treasure From Heaven is an account of the living Word of God as it has enriched my life. In the fourteenth chapter of the book of Matthew, Jesus distributed fish and bread to the disciples, directing them in turn to distribute to the multitude. The pattern continues as he gives us spiritual food and calls upon us to share it with ot hers.

In that spirit, I’m sharing the treasure I have received. Come along and rejoice in God’s love and care. If you have not yet personally experienced new life in Jesus, may these pages help you find a new appreciation for God’s Word and to seek him and his will for your life.

Introduction

Treasure From Heaven is a personal witness of God moving in my life. It is a witness of his willingness to love and care for each person born into the world. It is based on God’s Word as recorded in the Holy Bible, and portrays God’s gracious response to those who have faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

There is a wisdom and knowledge that only God can impart. Such wisdom and knowledge exists apart from information acquired through educational training. I know, because I, as well as many other believers in Christ, laypersons like myself, have received enlightened understanding of the Word of God through the Holy Spirit that dwells within us.

God uses various means to guide us and communicate his will, including his written Word, circumstances, and strong inner convictions. He desires to speak to every heart. I have never regretted listening to his voice and walking in his way, for my life has been enriched immeasurably.

True Treasure

Look unto me, and be ye saved,

all the ends of the earth: for I am God,

and there is none else.

—Isaiah 45:22

Christ lives now! God placed these celebratory words into my mind as I awoke one Sunday morning almost twenty years ago. Thanks to God, his Son, Jesus Christ, does live. Because of Jesus Christ, we have unfathomable riches. If you have received him as your Savior, you have claimed your treasure. If you have not, you’re missing more than you can ima gine.

With Jesus in your life, you have access to exhilarating communication with God. Not only can you talk to God, but also God will speak to you. If you have begun your walk with Jesus, perhaps you have
