News from the Holy Land I - Kay Whidbee Sherwood

    Chapter One

Almost running to keep pace with her husband Bob, Sue Windsor clutched the nineteen brown paper covered packages tightly. As soon as they arrived at the parcel post window, she dropped them on the counter, and while Bob had them weighed and stamped, she checked the flight schedule once more. The books, although several days later than promised, had arrived just in time to be wrapped, addressed, and mailed to the kids on their way to the airport. This was her first book, and Sue was a little disappointed to leave the country before anyone at home had read and given her feedback. But, she thought, I’m so thankful we can get it in the kids’ hands before it’s too late.

They rushed out of the post office and made it to the airport with time to spare, as was always the case with Bob. Absolutely dependable and uncannily adept at almost anything he determined to do, Bob had taken care of her and done everything he knew to make her happy since their marriage eighteen years ago. Although he seemed to always be in a hurry, he did know how to relax. They were both retired now and loved to do projects and travel together. They both had been married for many years to their first spouse and had both been single for several years when they met. They agreed that this was the marriage they were being prepared for during their earlier lives.

The kids, as they called them, were Bob’s two grown daughters, their husbands and children, as well as Sue’s four grown children and their daughters. They both adored all of the grandkids although they didn’t get to spend as much time with them as they would like, mainly because of the schedules and locations of the families. The parents were working long hours, and the children had very busy schedules with school, sports, etc. However, Bob and Sue had to remember that they too had very busy schedules. Since their retirement, Bob had often remarked that he didn’t know how they had ever found time to work. Now their lives would be completely changed and Sue didn’t know when they would see the kids again – if ever— on Earth.

When at last they had boarded the plane and were seated, Sue could reflect on their future life together and on the lives of the beloved offspring they were leaving behind.

First Bob and then Sue had felt a strong desire to return to Israel—a summons from God to join him in a somewhat unexplained mission. They had worked there a few years before and had always wanted to go back, but this was different.

Their call was confirmed by e-mail from Bridges for Peace (BFP) for Sue to travel in Israel and present her book in the Messianic Jewish community. BFP also needed Bob to supervise the volunteer program which repairs housing for needy Jewish immigrants. There was even an apartment reserved for the maintenance volunteer supervisor.

Sue had originally written the book to explain to her own kids what she believed was about to happen in the world. It became an end-time study book that hopefully everyone could read and understand. And hopefully, they would be warned and prepared by what they read. It was obvious to her, that among most people in our culture, secular humanism had taken the place of the real God of love, mercy, and grace. There was no such thing as truth any more. Truth had become relative. Moral values had all but lost the war against the Father of Lies, Satan. And in addition, the government of the country which was founded on freedom of religion had become more and more anti-Christian. All of these things had been prophesied by Jesus to happen before his return.

So many people, even believers, were intimidated by the books of Daniel and Revelation in the Bible, but when she read them, they seemed to come alive; although, what she read didn’t agree in every way with the popular teaching of the day. So many people thought that the believers would be caught up to be with Jesus before any of the sorrows of the end-times began. She prayed that her book would be a wakeup call for them to be prepared for coming tribulation.

With those thoughts, Sue turned her attention to the kids, praying for each one as she searched her spirit for an idea of their most important need at the moment. She visualized Jerri, who had just had surgery the week before and was recovering well, and who would be soon back to her own active self and able to go back to work, where she had just been promoted. Dan had been so strong and patient to care for her and for little Dan and Miki, but Sue believed that there was trouble in their marriage. Sue thanked God for his love for their family and asked him to bless them spiritually as well as physically and financially.

Then she began to pray for Sharon and Phil and their daughter, Renee’, who were in Belize with a team from their church building a church in an impoverished area outside of Belize City. She had seen a real change in Renee’ in the last four years. She thanked God for what he was working in that family and prayed for him to prepare them for what was about to happen.

Bob nudged her gently and asked if she wanted anything to eat or drink. She asked the stewardess for water and some peanuts for later. Then she went back to her time of prayer for kids. Alise, Sue’s oldest daughter needed prayer for a health problem and for a change in the situation in which she worked. Although she made a good salary and loved her work, the stress level and responsibility level were extremely high. Miles was so good for her. Sue prayed that he would understand the preparation and commitment necessary to make it in the soon to come end-times. Alise’s daughter Suzi, now a college student who knows the truth but faces every day, her peers, who know only the humanistic philosophy of their culture. Every day the Father of Lies talks to Suzi, trying to confuse her. Her prayer for Suzi was like a deep groaning of the spirit within her.

Sue’s thoughts moved from Suzi to Bonny, her youngest. Bonny and her husband Andrew were now walking with Jesus daily. They were growing spiritually by leaps and bounds. Sue prayed that God would protect them and pour out his spirit on them to grow them up in his word, his power, and his love, that they would be blessed and bless many in what was left of this life on earth. She prayed that God would give them supernatural grace to raise the youngest grandchild Esther, and be able to protect her in the troubling times to come.

Sue had left her two sons until last. George, the oldest never seemed happy. She believed it was because he knew God, but didn’t live for him. George wanted to be the ruler of his own life, perhaps thinking, One day I’ll come back to him. Or, I’m a better man than most. Sue prayed as she had for many years, for George and his brother, that their relationship to God be restored and that they would become the mighty men that God created them to be. She clung to the promise of Jesus that, Whatever you ask the Father in my name believing, he will do. One of the happiest days of Sue’s life had been when George’s wife Cha had asked her, How can I become a Christian?

Cha had listened as Sue told her how Satan had brought sin into the world through deceit and how Jesus had died on the cross to free us from the penalty of that sin. We only have to turn away from our sins and ask him to forgive them. When we turn away from sin, we turn to him, and he gives us a new life in his kingdom. He gives us the Holy Spirit to enable us to follow him. When she ended her prayer to Jesus, Cha told Sue that she had seen Jesus walk into her body. She said he glowed like the king of Siam. Cha’s life had changed. She was reading her Bible and learning about her king. She began attending the little church near their home and began making friends. She was happy and assertive. Sue prayed for God’s protection and guidance for her and for physical strength (although she wasn’t sure why).

Again Bob nudged her to order a dinner tray, so she requested the beef and a glass of red wine. She would pray for Tom’s family after dinner when everything quieted down again. Bob passed her tray, then reached for his. They held hands and he thanked God for the food and for his love and grace in their lives. I sure am glad there isn’t another person on this row. It’s much more comfortable and we can cuddle better.

And sleep better too. Sue answered, smiling. She loved that he was the eternal romantic and never tired of touching and telling her how much he loved her.

He was still trying to unwrap everything on his tray. The steak sure is little. Bob would place everything just so before he ate it. Sue usually liked airplane food because of the tiny portions of several different things. She would just dive in as soon as she could get the cellophane off one or two items. Bob had been reading a magazine article on fishing in the Sea of Galilee, so he started telling her about it. They had been to a kibbutz on the Sea of Galilee where they had eaten Peter’s Fish. Bob said it was the same thing we would call Perch. Maybe we’ll have a chance to go fishing there, he said hopefully.

After dinner Bob was ready to settle and watch a movie, or part of one; he would probably go to sleep in the middle of it. Sue could go back to her prayer time for the kids.

Sue was thankful to have a normal relationship with Tom and his family. They had been estranged from Sue and Bob for over two years because they blamed Tom’s mother and Bob for serious problems in their family. During that time, they would not speak or allow the children to speak to her. When Lila’s parents were killed, they accepted Sue’s compassion and slowly rekindled the relationship. During that time and even afterward, all she could do was pray. She prayed for Tom and Lila to come to God for salvation, and for healing for their bodies, souls, and spirits. She prayed for God to heal their marriage and family, to give them the grace and understanding to be the husband and wife to each other and the father and mother to their children that God created them to be.

Sue repeated the promise she had claimed for Tom and family from Isaiah 54:13: And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children. She finally drifted off for some much needed sleep during the last half of the flight. It would be a full day, late into the afternoon when they arrived in Tel Aviv.

After Sue finished the e-mail, she carried her second cup of coffee out to the balcony of their apartment. The apartment was tiny, but it served their purpose, and it had a perfect location just two blocks from the old city. She loved Jerusalem, especially the old city, but that was only part of the reason she and Bob had packed up everything to move here.

It had seemed to her that the twenty fourth chapter of Matthew was upon the United States and of course the rest of the world too. Immorality was accepted, and morality was reviled. Pornography, promiscuity, and perversion were to be excused as the results of growing up with a poor relationship with one’s parent or another adult. Homosexuality was elevated above the natural relationship between a man and his wife.

Family values were eroding at an alarming rate. To many people, marriage had become just another financial contract — when people bothered to get married at all. Dysfunctional families, with addicted parents, raising dysfunctional children made up a large proportion of the American population.

The public schools were filled with gangs who hated each other and intimidated non-gang students, and with kids who were so miserable with their home life that they created a dark subculture, revering depression and cutting themselves in order to acknowledge their pain. Sue was painfully aware of this latter bit of culture because one of her grandchildren had been involved in it.

Christians had no voice or rights, yet the president and his government continued to try to appease the Muslims. He had rejected the term terrorist to refer to radicals who hated the country because it supported Israel, which they still claimed had no right to exist. He had included members of the Muslim Brotherhood as part of his advisory staff. The dangerous bill from the UN to outlaw criticism of religions had been passed making freedom of speech a lost right of Americans and making way for even greater application of Sharia Law (Muslim Law).

The president had abused his power over and over, bypassing Congress with executive orders to further his own cause (not that of the people). He had ordered five nuclear carriers into the harbor in Norfolk, Virginia for routine inspections – the first time since Pearl Harbor that five U.S. aircraft carriers were docked together. It was a breach of long standing Navy protocol and a flagrant defiance of national security interests. Bob had said that though nothing happened that time, the president was just testing the waters to see if he could get away with it. Next time would be a disaster.

The country had gone through an economic depression, made worse by the attempts of the government to bail out all of the industries and banks that were failing, sometimes against the will of the companies. What they had ended up with was a socialist centralized government, trillions of dollars of debt, and an enormous tax burden. It seemed to Sue that it had been
