    Dedication

I would never have finished this book without the encouragement of my wife. We have explored the world together for more than twenty years. She has stood by me, she has pushed me, and, when necessary, she has pulled me back. Thank you, LaShea, for ALWAYS believing in me—even when I didn’t believe in myself. God blessed me with a wonderful, beautiful gift in you. I love you.

To my children: Kiera, Makena, Aliyah, and Tegan—I love you! Thanks for letting daddy work during those times I couldn’t be with you. You have been so patient with the process. You gave me the opportunity to pursue my dream and now I encourage you to pursue your dreams with all your heart. Nothing is impossible if you believe (and if you work real hard)!

Lastly, to my moms! I am so thankful for your love for me. Mom (Aleene Brooks) and Momma Grace (Grace Loudin)–you both are beautiful women of God. I am indebted to God that He chose you to be in my life. Any rewards that I have in heaven should be credited to your accounts as well. You have reflected God’s image with excellence!

    I love my family!

    About The Author

    Foreword

    Ron Carpenter, Jr.

There is so much more in you. You are a masterpiece designed by God Himself. Oftentimes, we underestimate who God created us to be. I dedicate my life to helping people understand the message of the Kingdom. To me, there is a lot more to being a Christian then going to church and one day going to heaven. God intends for heaven to come to you now!

In Psalm 8:5, there is something special about humanity. God made us capable of greatness on the earth. The Psalmist says that you and I were created a little lower than God Himself. There is so much potential within you but without a revelation you will never see it. Tony Colson, one of my spiritual sons, has written this book to empower you with the keys that will unlock the potential of the Kingdom in your life. Tony has uncovered a powerful reality about who you are. You are designed for glory. In Part Two: Embracing Your Identity, he will help you discover the five components of your Divine DNA. You are going to be excited to know that you have been empowered with blessing, equipped to increase, positioned to rule, created for healthy relationships and called to a unique purpose! You have a divine DNA waiting to be released to the world. Your divine DNA is so valuable that Jesus Himself came to give it back to you.

Humbly, Tony shares his personal struggle which involved disappointment, confusion, and fear. God transformed him and He will transform you. Tony will guide you to the place of escaping your past, embracing your identity, and entering your future. This is not a theological book with good theories. He has included practical instructions and keys that will work in your life. You will be encouraged as you realize just how much potential you have. You don’t have to wait one more minute to activate the power of God in your life. It’s time that you finally embraced everything that God has for you. It’s time for you to unlock your divine DNA!

    Introduction

    A Small Lie

For as he thinks within himself, so he is.

    —King Solomon (Proverbs 23:7 NASB)

On a cloudy fall day, Jim puts his folding chair and cooler in the back seat of his car. It is an early Saturday morning with that brisk It’s football time! feeling in the air. He gets into the driver’s seat, adjusts his seat forward, and starts the engine. Jim backs out of his driveway and makes his way to the local ballfield, where scores of young boys would be going head to head while experiencing the game of football throughout the day. Jim loved to watch the boys play. Yet Jim wasn’t there to watch a son or a nephew or even a friend’s son. He was there because he had a dream. He longed to have a son of his own. Yet the doctors had told him and his wife that it was impossible for them to have another child.

The events suggested above would have been a similar scenario to multiple Saturdays when Jim would vicariously live out his desire to be a dad through a view from the stands. But a no from the doctor seemed to suggest this reality would never happen. After coming to the conclusion that their longing for a son wouldn’t happen the natural way, Jim and Aleene decided to adopt. They had already been serving as foster parents, so they were somewhat familiar with the process. They made the necessary phone calls and began their wait.

It was at this point of surrender—and yet determination—that Aleene surprisingly became pregnant. What the doctors had said would be impossible was now a small child forming within her womb. Anticipation grew as the days and weeks passed. Finally, the day came, and it was confirmed—Jim was having a boy!

Jim and Aleene named him Tony. Tony Lyn Colson.

I was born on August 14, 1971. I wish I could say we lived happily ever after, but life isn’t always fair. Eight years later, my daddy was diagnosed with lymphoma and died. Not long after my dad’s death, I never played football again. My mom just couldn’t bear my participation in football—just too many scary moments for her. Nevertheless, life wasn’t over for us, although life was different. The pain caused by the loss of such a great man was unbearable, but my mom tried to bury it and move forward with her life. After that, affection and endearing words were not expressed as often in our day-to-day interactions. Life was different. Scarred by this tragedy of life and faith, she loved us the best way she knew how. She raised me and my two siblings as a single mother for a few years and then remarried.

Honorably, my father wanted her to find a man who could replace him. Unfortunately, the person who won my mom’s heart had hidden a dark side that would be discovered shortly after their wedding day. In private, he was different from the nice, hardworking man with whom she had fallen in love. Behind closed doors, he was a tyrant and cultivated an atmosphere of continual hurt and pain for four already broken people.

We became more broken and less alive. The mental and emotional abuse took its toll on each of us. Fear was our new normal. Joy was absent. The family that my dad longed for was lost within the storm of a dysfunctional home. Death had not just stolen my dad; it had stolen our experience of being a family. The words I love you fell silent to the crying out from broken hearts just trying to survive.

As the days passed, this little boy began to grow up. But inside, the longing for a dad never ceased. Thankfully, my uncle stepped up and attempted to fulfill a daddy’s role for me. Unfortunately, right before my wedding day, he was taken from me. A weak and damaged heart finally got the best of him. Now death had stolen my best man too.

God was gracious and brought other men into my life to help fill my need for a father, but it was always limited by the fact that I wasn’t really their son. Each of these men had sons of their own, and understandably, that had to be their priority. These conditional, limited relationships, with the substitute fathers in my life, slowly deteriorated my trust in all relationships.

Acceptance and belief in my value as a person also suffered. The older I grew, the more I lost trust in what I knew. The way faith had worked in the past didn’t seem to work anymore. The trust I had in people who were supposed to love me slipped away with each disappointment. This atmosphere of mistrust and a questioning of everything I had known also led me to a place of questioning my identity.

    Who am I?

    What is my purpose?

    Why am I here?

After arriving at adulthood and marrying a beautiful woman named LaShea, the assault on my identity increased in its intensity. It was 1994 on a rainy day in Eastern Tennessee. LaShea and I said our marriage vows and left for our honeymoon in Jamaica. After our first week of beginning life together, we returned on a Thursday, re-packed our bags, and then left for Europe on Saturday to participate in a Discipleship Training School (DTS) through Youth With A Mission (YWAM). We were so excited!

On one hand, this adventure has tales of castles, the Swiss Alps, buildings that are centuries old, and cultures that we had only read about in textbooks. The DTS gave us the opportunity to see Europe in a unique way. It was also a romantic way to start life together. In the first six months of our marriage, we visited 11 countries and slept in 22
