    Life’s Puzzle

Is there nothing substantial for us humans to get out of life?

What is the meaning of life anyhow? We are born, we live a little while, and then we die. Is that all? Is there nothing substantial for us humans to get out of life?

These are longstanding questions that have been plaguing humanity for thousands of years. For instance, nearly three thousand years ago, a king named Solomon reigned in Jerusalem. Solomon was known all over the ancient world for his exceptional riches and astounding wisdom, and even he had these questions.

Solomon recorded a detailed description of his search for answers in a book titled Ecclesiastes. Following is excerpts from the second chapter of this book.

I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine . . . and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself. I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.

I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem . . . Also my wisdom remained with me. And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them.

Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Like Solomon, countless people have devoted their life to the pursuit of wealth and self-indulgence, in hopes of finding a continuing sense of fulfillment. Although these things can bring enjoyment, at best, it is but an empty form of pleasure, always craving for more and never content to just relax and be satisfied.

Many folks try to avoid quietness and inactivity, in a subconscious attempt to prevent thinking about their ongoing pursuit of satisfaction and fulfillment. Even so, millions of people battle with depression and a sense of worthlessness. In fact, this is an underlying cause behind much of today’s drug abuses and suicides. Meanwhile, this quest for fulfillment is pushing criminal activity to a critical height.

The reality of these facts brings on the question, Is there an answer? Is there nobody who has a better conclusion than Solomon’s?

Fortunately, there is an ultimate explanation. But let us warn you, it is not for the coward. In the contrary, only the brave-hearted and truth-seeking individuals will find it worth absorbing; for it is raw reality, undiluted and frightfully powerful!
